About the Engineering Design Division:


The Engineering Design Division (EDD) runs the 1st-year engineering program in the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science. The program has over 300 1st-year students, who take four engineering courses taught by EDD faculty: Introduction to Engineering Design and Engineering Communications I in the fall semester; and Introduction to Engineering Analysis and Engineering Communications II in the spring semester. The Engineering Communication courses are project-based. Students work on two engineering projects in the fall and a single, semester-long project in the spring. All projects are done in small groups. Students write reports and give presentations about their projects. Engineering communications is a central focus of the first year program. Instruction in technical writing and research methods is provided. The Communication courses meet for two hours, once each week. Technical instruction to aid with the projects and help students decide on an engineering major is provided in the Introduction to Engineering Design and Analysis courses. Job Description:


The engineering communications coordinator is focused on teaching our 1st-year engineering students the necessary oral and written communication skills to be successful in their engineering major and career. The coordinator teaches several sections of the Communications courses in both the fall and spring semesters. Additionally, the coordinator supervises part-time instructors in the Engineering Communications I & II courses and works with the Introduction to Engineering Design and Analysis course instructors to provide our 1st-year engineering students a well-rounded introduction to engineering. The coordinator creates instructional material for the Communications courses with inputs from other 1st-year faculty. The coordinator holds office hours, advises students, assists with several Watson School Open Houses and other weekend activities, may advise Watson School student organizations, and assist with other University service activities. The coordinator will also advise, and assist interested faculty in Watson School engineering departments with communications content in their courses.


This is a ten-month, non-tenure track, lecturer position. The initial appointment is 3 years with the possibility for renewal.



Requirements:


Qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in engineering or closely related field. A Ph.D. in engineering education is preferred. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written, and a strong commitment to teaching are required. The candidate must have college-level instructional and curriculum development experience.

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
