Job Description:

The Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) in the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University (The State University of New York at Binghamton) invites applications for two faculty members, at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level starting in Spring 2020 or Fall 2020. The positions involve teaching at all levels from undergraduate courses to advanced graduate courses, and establishing theoretical and applied research in emerging areas in industrial and systems engineering. One position requires expertise in the broad areas of health systems engineering, healthcare data science/analytics, population health, healthcare information technology/systems, and personalized/precision medicine. The other position requires hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing, with special interest in areas such as contemporary additive manufacturing (3D printing), advanced robotics or cobotics (collaborative robots), intelligent/flexible production systems, green manufacturing, smart manufacturing, the use of Internet of Things (IoT) to transform the future of manufacturing, and advanced automation and cyber-physical systems. Qualified applicants in other emerging areas of industrial and systems engineering may be considered.

The Watson School is dedicated to the goal of building a diverse and inclusive teaching, research, and working environment. Potential applicants who share this goal, and especially underrepresented minorities, women and persons with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to help increase the number of women, underrepresented minorities and persons with disabilities, as well as help increase external funding to support diverse populations. Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the department website (http://www.ssie.binghamton.edu) for more details

For the 2018-2019 fiscal year, the SSIE Department secured $5.76 million in committed funds and had a total of about $5.54 million in research expenditures. At this level of research productivity, the SSIE Department ranked the highest in the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied and the second on-campus in committed funds and research expenditures. Our faculty members work collaboratively with over 30 sponsors from industry and federal agencies. With an excellent and growing academic reputation, the SSIE Department is internationally renowned in the electronics manufacturing/electronics packaging arena. Another area of substantial growth is health systems, and our faculty works with several major healthcare organizations across the nation and abroad. The department is continuing significant expansion, including these two positions.

The department has twenty-three (23) faculty members and offers a BS degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) and MS and PhD Degrees in both Systems Science (SS) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (or ISE). SSIE also offers a cutting-edge executive health systems program in Manhattan. With about 220 undergraduate, 210 masters, and 180 doctoral students, the department is growing in numbers and in reputation.

One of these positions is affiliated with the University's Health Sciences Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence (TAE). The successful candidate will contribute to the development of this TAE as an area of research and teaching. The search committee will include members of the Health Sciences TAE steering committee as well as from the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering. Message on working at Binghamton University from President Harvey Stenger

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
