Job Description:

Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)

Salary: Commensurate with experience

The Assistant Director of Course Building, reporting to the Director of Course Building and Academic Space Management, is responsible for overseeing the course catalog and schedule of classes in Banner. This will include all testing of upgrades/patches to Banner, course building training for new staff, development of training materials and incorporation into the portal/website, oversight of the edit check process, coordination with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment on SUNY reporting and collaborating with other functional offices and schools in the development of on-line program set ups. The Assistant Director will ensure that the Schedule of Classes is error free, complies with all business rules, provide the departments/schools the functionality they need in their course offerings, minimizes student registration problems due to course set up and accurately reflects supplemental data required by SUNY.

The Assistant Director of Course Building will have the following primary responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the annual course catalog description update process working with the provost's, dean's and advising offices
  • Oversee the development of the schedule of classes for fall and spring semesters working with the provost's office, dean's offices and academic departments and coordinate the development of the schedule of classes for winter and summer with the Center for Learning and Teaching
  • Manage the edit check process, including identifying criteria for new edit check reports
  • Develop standardized reports for course builders to use in the development of their course offerings
  • Provide ad hoc reports as required
  • Ensure all requests for changes to courses after course building is closed are processed in a timely fashion and comply with policies and business rules. Delegate processing of requests to other staff, as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with Room Scheduling Coordinator on classroom assignments
  • Work with Institutional Research and Assessment staff to ensure all SUNY reporting requirements related to course catalog and schedule are error free, are reflective of course offerings and comply with SUNY definitions.
  • Train staff in Banner course building and develop documentation and training materials for incorporation in the office website/portal
  • Collaborate with other functional offices/schools in the development of on-line program set ups
  • Perform required testing of upgrades and patches affecting Banner catalog and schedule


  • Bachelor's degree and minimum two years' experience working in higher education setting
  • Experience with Student Information Systems
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently, as the task requires
  • Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize workload
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written
  • Technical expertise in the use of spreadsheets, presentation programs & databases and ability/eagerness to learn new programs/systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Banner 9 Catalog and Schedule
  • Experience with Base SAS and/or SAS Enterprise Guide
