Job Description

The College of Education & Human Development, Department of Educator and Leadership Preparation at Texas A&M University – San Antonio seeks innovative and engaging applicants for a full-time, tenure-track appointment beginning in Spring 2020 for an Assistant Professor of Special Education with an emphasis in low incidence disabilities, early childhood or culturally diverse students. 

The Special Education program reflects an active faculty devoted to teaching, service, scholarship, and professional development. Quality performance will be expected in scholarship/research, teaching, and active department/university/community service. 

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate/graduate level special education courses via different formats (e.g. Face to Face, Hybrid, Online) while working collaboratively with faculty to deliver a comprehensive special education program supporting diverse populations. Successful candidates will also support students in preparation for Texas state certification in EC-12 Special Education (TExES Exam).

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will: (a) develop and maintain an active scholarship/research agenda (b) serve on program, departmental and College committees; (c) support the culturally and linguistically diverse populations served by the University; and (d) maintain professional development through engagement, interaction, and relevant activities. The successful candidate will also be expected to work in collaboration with other colleagues in the College of Education and Human Development, with community partners, and maintain involvement in campus activities and other responsibilities as deemed necessary. Work hours vary with the schedule, and evening/weekend hours may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An earned Doctorate Degree in Special Education or closely related field; ABD may be considered if completed before hiring) 
  • 18 graduate hours in each field(s) in which candidate will teach (at least 18 graduate hours must be in special education.) 
  • For candidates who do not have 18 graduate hours in one of the cognate areas (Early Childhood, Culturally Diverse Learners, Low Incidence Populations) the candidate must have at least three years of K-12 experience directly teaching in one of those areas.
  • Teaching certification in an area of special education with 3 years minimum lead teaching experience in a special education setting
  • Experience working with culturally diverse and special education populations
  • Evidence of teaching, service, and scholarly potential/productivity. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge in low incidence disabilities, early childhood special education, or multicultural special education. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and provide excellent service to students, employees and the community

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Teaching experience in higher education 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experiences in working with low Incidence, early childhood special education, or culturally diverse special education learners in a PK-12 system
  • Proficiency in technology and application integration 
  • Demonstrate experience teaching via different formats (e.g. Face to Face, Hybrid, Online)
  • Experience in field-based mentoring/supervision experience of teacher candidates
