Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Plant and Environmental Sciences

Job description

Clemson University: College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences: Plant & Environmental Sciences
Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Plant and Environmental Sciences

Location: Clemson, SC

The primary goal of this Research Fellow (RF) is to engage in a vigorous basic and applied genetics/genomics research program focused on understanding somatic embryogenesis on the molecular/cellular level in Upland cotton. This exciting project is funded through the Center for Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) and NASA, and experimental components of this project will be conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory. This project seeks to determine the effects of micro-gravity on several unique cotton genotypes during the course of somatic embryogenesis. This work will include generation and analysis of large amounts of systems genomics data that includes, genome, transcriptome, and epigenome and will require appropriate in vitro techniques and bioinformatics/genetic analysis.

Job Functions

Experiments: Plan and execute research experiments, analyze data, and prepare manuscripts - E/50%

Tissue Culture: Prepare media, generate callus, and interact with Implementation Partner to prepare launch payload - E/25%

Bioinformatics and Computational Analysis: Process and analyze systems genomics datasets - E/25%

Pay and Work Schedule:
Standard Hrs: 37.5; Salary commensurate with education, training, and experience.

Minimum Requirements: PhD in genetics or biology with a solid background in tissue culture and in vitro biology and strong experience in bioinformatics analysis of next generation sequencing data.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work independently and alongside genetics/genomics researchers is important. The project requires experience in tissue culture and working with large sequence datasets (genomic, RNAseq, epigenomic) and integrating systems data. Familiarity with the latest available analytical tools is essential.
