Job Description Summary

This position is for a talented, passionate individual with the skill and desire to contribute to an outstanding IT team. Provides technical experience as part of a team that proactively monitors, maintains and grows the technical infrastructure that supports the daily operations of the University. The Linux System Administrator reports to the Director of Network Services and Information Security.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Installs, upgrades and maintains operating systems on requisite hardware and virtual machine platforms
  • Performs computer hardware maintenance
  • Implements system upgrades and patches
  • Automates administration tasks through scripting
  • Assist in the maintenance of data center infrastructure
  • Recommend related policies and procedures
  • Participate in a 24×7 on-call system administrator rotation
  • System administration duties for a portion of the campus server environment
  • Leverage experience and judgment to accomplish goals with a moderate degree of supervision; exercises some independent decision making as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Skills:

  • Understanding of operating systems, server and storage hardware infrastructure or Linux operating system administration
  • Basic knowledge of Windows Server operating system administration
  • Basic knowledge of networking technologies and implementations
  • Time and task management for self
  • Ability to identify and de-conflict priorities
  • Tenacious problem-solving abilities
  • Participate as a member of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with a true desire to help fellow employees
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

This position is eligible to be filled at either of the University’s Potsdam, NY or Schenectady, NY campuses. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience, and Skills
  • Completion of secondary education (high school) or equivalent
  • Two to four years of Linux or UNIX system and/or network administration or equivalent education
  • Administration of a variety of hardware, software, server and network platforms in a production environment
  • System administration within a virtualization technology
  • Demonstrated use of scripting language native to platform
Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Information Systems or similar concentration
  • More than five years of system administration
  • Independent system administration of multiple Windows, Linux or UNIX systems in a 24×7 production environment
  • Knowledge of databases and database management
  • Demonstrated use of scripting language for automation or configuration management
