Financial Aid SpecialistDescription/Job Summary This position manages a caseload of student’s files assesses an individual student’s financial need and ascertains the student’s eligibility to participate in federal, state and/or institutional aid programs. The specialist provides counseling to students on the manner of integrating their financial concerns, relative to personal and/or academic problems. Analyzes financial information submitted by students; provides counseling to students and assists student or parents in the preparation of pertinent forms. Conducts financial aid workshops/conferences and completes all internal and external reports. Evaluates the academic status of each applicant; keeps abreast of current federal regulations and guidelines pertaining to the student financial aid program. Administers the College’s State, Local, and Institutional scholarship programs by applying conferred awards accurately and appropriately to the tuition accounts of award recipients, and validating award criteria (i.e. enrollment status, residence status, GPA, etc.). Renders professional judgment and implementing policy regarding special appeals for academic progress, and other atypical situations regarding eligibility. Informs the U.S. Department of ED via the National Student Loan Data System of mid-year transfer students for monitoring and reviewing, in an effort to prevent over awards, throughout the ongoing periods of enrollment within the academic year. Monitors and makes the necessary account adjustments to students’ awards for noncompliance with the quantitative measure of the standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress. Drafts literature, documents, presentation materials and other devices used to facilitate the functioning of the Student Financial Aid Office (i.e. electronic scholarship submission form, Merit Scholarship brochure, orientation PowerPoint presentation, forms, letters, etc.). Drafts correspondence to solicit student participation in available scholarship programs (i.e. Wilson Presidential Scholarship, Academic Competitive Grant)

Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, and word processing to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. Applies a working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations; verifies documents for completeness and compliance. Operates fax machine, copier and other office equipment.

As a requirement of this position, Baltimore City Community College will expect the incumbent to provide and be evaluated on the effective delivery of services through evening and weekend coverage, providing coverage at off-campus sites as deemed necessary, cross-training in related functions to support operational efficiency, provide as appropriate instruction and or instructional support in a manner that best enhances student learning and success.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience working in the Financial Aid Office, experience with scholarship programs needed.
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and/ or word processing required.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite, the internet and student data systems required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Maryland Higher Education Commission MDCaps program
