The School of Art and Design encourages knowledge and understanding of the history and studio practices of the visual arts. It is the goal of the faculty for our students to develop abilities to think critically, to communicate effectively, to be competent with new technologies and their chosen media, and to work cooperatively for the benefit of the community. The School of Art and Design will continue its leadership role in the arts and be proactive in establishing eastern North Carolina as a major research center for the visual arts. To achieve these goals the School supports a diverse, professionally active, and engaged faculty sharing its research with communities.

Job Duties

Wood Shop & Shape Lab: Supervise all shop activity, to prevent personal injury and misuse of equipment. Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including those governing equipment usage, personal protective equipment usage, the handling of hazardous materials, and physical work space hazards. Follow appropriate procedures in the event of a fire drill, a fire, an accident involving personal injury, a spillage of hazardous substances.

Wood Shop & Shape Lab: Teach beginning students to safely operate tools and equipment. Demonstrate a variety of basic woodworking techniques. Periodically conduct in-depth demonstrations for Design classes. Assist Shop users with technical issues. Cut various materials for those who are reluctant or inexperienced. Develop and maintain a respectful and courteous relationship with faculty, staff, and students. The technician would teach beginning students to safely operate tools and equipment while demonstrating a variety of basic technology skills in the Shape Lab.

Wood Shop & Shape Lab: Assist with Shop clean-up. Assist with various repair projects. Maintain a good level of communication and cooperation with the University Facilities Services Department in regards to facility maintenance, waste removal, delivery and special handling of equipment, supplies and materials. Perform other duties as assigned.

Sculpture Area: Become familiar with all equipment and protective gear employed in the Sculpture Area. Establish and maintain a regular schedule of inspection, maintenance, inventory, and requisition or replacement of said equipment, in consultation with area faculty.

Organize and manage the following on a daily basis: physical workspace; equipment storage and security; the safe handling and storage of a variety of supplies and materials.

Sculpture Area: As required, assist faculty in repairing, altering, modifying, and building various tools, equipment, and devices necessary for the normal operation of the Area. These duties typically include: building shelves or special storage units; constructing tables, racks, carts, shields, and other items required for welding, stone carving, metal casting, mold making, and fabrication processes.

Sculpture Area: Maintain a clean and safe working environment. This responsibility includes supervising student workers in clean-up activities of both a routine nature and as required by special events or operations. Establish and maintain a good level of communication and cooperation with the University Facilities Services Department in regard to facility maintenance, waste removal, and delivery and special handling of equipment, supplies, and materials.

Minimum Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
