The Brody School of Department at East Carolina University (ECU) is composed of 18 departments which function to: 1) provide health care for the citizens of eastern North Carolina; 2) educate primary care physicians to meet the health care needs of eastern North Carolina; and 3) make medical education available to minority and disadvantaged people. The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences (herein referred to as Cardiovascular Sciences or CVS) is the university’s newest department, and is a primary contributor to the School’s mission of medical education, patient care, research, and community service.
Playing an important role in the Brody School of Department’s academic group practice, the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences consists of the Department Chairman, two Medical Directors of Clinical Services, four leadership core units (Department Administrator, CVS Operations Committee/Section Chiefs, Nurse Administrator, and Vice Chairman and Director of Research), and seven clinical and educational divisions. The primary roles of education (students, residents, fellows and continuing medical education), clinical services (Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary Prevention, and Vascular Diseases), research (clinical and basic bench research in cardiovascular clinical care, clinical trials to develop new treatments for cardiovascular disease, educational programs for local, regional, and national health care providers, and wellness and prevention programs), academic affairs/faculty development, and administration (business and clinical support services) are led by the Department Chairman and CVS Operations Committee. The clinical sections represented in Cardiovascular Diseases include: Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary Prevention, and Vascular Diseases. There are currently 37 MD andPhD faculty members, 15 Fellows, and 16 Physician Extenders and Cardiovascular Sciences Technicians.
A clinical, administrative, and research support staff numbering nearly 160 CSS and SPA employees provides support to the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences’ faculty and learner groups. Subspecialty fellows (fully trained internists receiving training in a clinical subspecialty within Cardiovascular Sciences and Internal Department) currently number seventeen.
The majority of the department’s educational, clinical and research activities take place within the context of the East Carolina University Brody School of Department and the Vidant Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina. The central component of the medical center is the East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI). Designed to be a world-class cardiovascular destination offering state-of-the-art medical technology, education, and research in one location, the East Carolina Heart Institute is composed of three main partners Vidant Medical Center (VMC), East Carolina University, and private practice practitioners. The new Institute is committed to superior patient care, collaborative research, and continuous training and education. The East Carolina Heart Institute is the umbrella name for the two facilities that make up the Institute: ECHI at East Carolina University and ECHI at Vidant Medical Center.

Job Duties

The vascular physician extender will have to utilize techniques of interviewing and medical history taking, principles and practice of general medicine and disease as they relate to the area of vascular surgery. The physician extender will apply knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests and findings and therapeutic procedures as they are related to the area of vascular surgery including studies performed in the non-invasive vascular lab. To fulfill this task, the individual would have to be familiar with normal lab values as well as clinical implications of abnormal lab values. The person in this position will have to be prepared to act immediately on abnormal data, make decisions and communicate these to the vascular surgeon and/or act independently.
The physician extender often independently run their own Vascular Clinic to help facilitate better care and access for our patients. The extender functions in an independent role, is responsible for seeing consults, return patients, hospital follow up patients, and pre-operative patients, dictating clinical notes as well as being responsible for the coordination of the patient’s surgery and cath lab procedures’ (History and Physical, orders, etc.).
The physician extender is responsible for patients paperwork in respect to medical leave, short term disability, FMLA and other necessary forms.
Inpatient responsibilities include daily team rounds, administrative meetings and other various projects. The person in this position will have to be extensively trained and proficient in working with all types of vascular patients requiring vast ranges of medical management.
The physician extender is responsible for facilitating efficient discharges, admissions, dictating discharge summaries, patient education, seeing inpatient consults, pre-operative and post-operative care, wound care, interdisciplinary rounds, coordinating inpatient procedures, and service rounds on the hospital ward. This is in addition to first assisting in the operating room with the vascular surgeons as needed.
The physician extender is also available by pager during normal business hours for in-house nursing and medical staff for assistance, answering patient care questions or concerns, and general questions to help facilitate optimal patient care.
The physician extender helps manage the day to day tasks of the resident staff, independently makes decisions on patient care, coordinates inpatient surgical care (implements plan of care), oversees residents’ medical decision making and serves as liaison between the resident staff and the attending physicians.
The physician extender on the vascular service provides guidance and professional expertise, leadership, management of vacation and conference absences, and orientation to new hires.
The physician extender will have to have the ability to supervise and coordinate other allied health personnel, to evaluate the quality of services delivered by health care providers and to institute methods of improving or maintaining established standards of medical and nursing care.
This physician extender will be a resource for medical students, residents, nurses and other allied health professionals, regarding vascular surgery. Physician extender is also responsible for precepting physician assistant students, completing evaluation forms, and acting in a teaching capacity.
The physician extender is responsible for providing in-services to staff members. They participate in vascular screening programs aimed at the promotion of the East Carolina Heart Institute at Vidant and ECU.
This individual will interact with every member of the medial team, not only at this institution, but, on occasion, at other institutions as well.
Since the inception of the ECHI at VMC, the physician extender is responsible for being the coordinator of surgical and cath lab schedules (outpatient and inpatient) for the operating room staff of the ECHI and the attending providers because of the multiple procedures we perform and different departments within the ECHI at VMC.
The physician extender is responsible for providing the weekly schedule of the attendings to the OR staff of ECHI at VMC to help coordinate the weeks schedule. Constant communication between the OR/cath lab scheduler, OR/cath lab staff to efficiently schedule and execute surgeries.
The ECHI at VMC now holds weekly Continuing Medical Education conferences for which the physician extender is responsible for facilitating, coordinating credits received for the conference, record-keeping and general administrative support for this conference.
This physician extender will be responsible for assisting with clinical research, initiated by the section chief. He/she will be responsible for data analysis, writing summaries of data generated during clinical or experimental research as well as outlining the conclusions of potential significance of generated data. The person in this position will have to do the following things: maintain accurate records, assure strict adherence to grant requirements, specimen collection, development and maintenance of appropriate data collection. The person in this position will have to do a data analysis for the final study evaluation and publication.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/Experience

Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners; or graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee and licensed by the NC Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Graduate of a physician assistant program approved by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and approved to practice medical acts based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners. Must be NCCPA certified
