Working under the oversight of a Trees Specialist II, these employees perform a variety

of duties related to maintenance of mature trees; some duties are performed in a training

capacity. The Tree Specialist II provides detailed instructions for each job, supervises

work during progress, and trains the Tree Specialist I in the skills, knowledge and safety

procedures required for higher-level work.
Characteristic Duties:


  • Remove parts of trees, or assist in the removal of whole trees

  • Prune and perform other operations as directed to maintain good physical

    appearance and continued growth of trees

  • Spray trees, using a spray provided by a higher-level employee

  • Set up and use high-work safety apparatus and equipment, such as rope apparatus

  • Use a variety of hand and power tools and equipment, as directed by the

    supervisor: power chain saws, stump grinders, chippers, pruners, tractors, farm
    implements, boom lift trucks
  • Follow safety procedures as specified for all equipment.



    Qualifications:


  • Certified or qualified to be certified as a tree worker or have equivalent
    experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license

  • Ability to perform tree specialist duties in all types of outside weather conditions

  • Ability to work in an environment where there is to pollen, dust and poison oak or
    other allergens
  • For poison oak, willingness to participate in an immunization program

  • Ability to climb and work as high as 75 feet; ability to lift up to 100 pounds

  • Ability to withstand extensive standing, walking, stooping, squatting, pushing,
    and pulling
  • Ability to follow job-related instructions given in English, either verbally or in
    writing
  • Practical knowledge of growth requirements of some plants or trees or of plants

    and trees in general and/or practical knowledge of grounds equipment

  • Must have previous work experience in groundskeeping, grounds equipment
    operation, and/or related work
  • Must be able to understand work instructions in English, either verbally or in
    writing
  • Basic computer systems knowledge for work order and time entry.
