The College and the District

Skyline College is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), enrolling approximately 16,000 students each academic year. The Position

The Instructional Aide II (Grant Funded) position provides tutoring in Basic Skills course sections and also tutors students individually and in small groups. Under direction, the employee performs a variety of preparatory work and planning, and at faculty direction, prepares materials for use in support of the classroom. In addition, the position assists the Learning Center Manager with the daily operations of the Writing, Reading, and ESOL labs in the Learning Center. Public contact is extensive and primarily includes students, faculty, and staff, but can also include vendors and staff from other educational institutions and agencies for the purpose of exchanging subject matter and procedural information. The work schedule for this position may include some evening hours.

This is a temporary position funded by the Basic Skills Initiative (BSI) Categorical Funds and may be eliminated once the funding has been exhausted.Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Exchanges information with students, faculty, and staff regarding subject matter, resources, materials, policies and procedures associated with the classroom or laboratory setting

2. Tutors students on topics related to one or more of the four tutoring assistance labs; directs students in the completion of assignments in the Learning Center; confers with students, faculty, and staff about student progress; provides information and assistance to students, faculty, and college staff regarding Learning Center procedures

3. Confers with faculty regarding curriculum, student materials for use in the classroom or laboratory, computer hardware, software, other learning tools, equipment and supplies, student assignments and progress, tests and student test scores, proctoring and scoring tests, student attendance, purchase or modification, inventory and storage of equipment, and other technical information related to the services and programs offered

4. Assists with the training and supervision of student assistants and student tutors

5. Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops to obtain current procedural and other information and participates in division and department planning activities as needed

6. Makes presentations to small and large groups to publicize services and programs as assigned

7. Troubleshoots operational problems with Learning Center equipment

8. Researches background of subject matter to maintain current information and compiles and organizes lesson plans and materials for presentation

9. Maintains a library of teaching and learning materials

10. Uses a variety of computer software to organize and maintain learning resources and related data, faculty materials, tests and related data, prepares routine correspondence, reports, publicity and other materials

11. Sets up and maintains online and manual files

12. Enters, modifies and retrieves a variety of statistical and other data for special and regular reports as assigned

13. Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in one of the disciplines tutored within the Writing and Reading Tutorial Lab and English for Speakers of Other Languages Tutorial Lab in The Learning Center

• Successful work experience of increasing responsibility, preferably in a classroom or laboratory setting, that has included tutoring students

• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

• Experience with directing the work of others and training new staff

• Skill in written and oral communication, including public speaking

• Experience with research, compiling data for and preparation of statistical, narrative, and other reports

• Skill in multitasking, prioritizing workloads, and working independently

• Skill in the use of a variety of computer software to prepare correspondence and reports from rough draft

• Skill in setting up and maintaining online and manual files

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Working knowledge of the specific subject matter(s) tutored in the Learning Center

2. Skill in working with diverse adult learning styles

3. Skill in clear and direct oral communication, including public speaking

4. Skill in respectful, tactful and sensitive interaction with people who are diverse in their academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds

7. Skill in performing routine research within a designated subject matter area

Physical Requirements

This classification requires manual dexterity; use of a keyboard, mouse and computer for extended periods of time; pulling, pushing, reaching; and moving items of light to moderate weight in order to perform the essential functions.
