Under the direction of the Dean of Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, the Research Analyst performs a wide variety of research, assessment, evaluation, and planning tasks that support the District's mission

This position is categorically funded through the Student Equity Program. Initial salary placement for this positon will be $75,981.

JOB DUTIES:
Job duties of the Research Analyst include:

  • Independently plans designs, coordinates, implements, monitors, and disseminates research, assessment and evaluation studies/data reports in support of the District's decision-making, planning activities, program review, outcomes and assessment cycle, enrollment management, grant requirements, mandated reporting requirements, accreditation needs, ad-hoc requests, and other measures of institutional effectiveness.
  • Conducts research, assessment and evaluation studies connected with student equity, basic skills and related student success, persistence, retention, completion, transfer and other student success outcomes.
  • Implements research, assessment and evaluation studies, including coordinating analyses and tabulation of results. Evaluates data using a variety of appropriate software applications for data analysis, data management, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, and word processing used in social science research (such as Survey Monkey, SPSS, Crystal Reports, Tableau, Power BI, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • May conduct research, assessment and evaluation studies for other instructional and non-instructional programs and services, as needed.
  • Creates, updates and maintains informational and publicity-oriented publications/documents including Annual FactBook, FactSheet and Guidebook.
  • Coordinates with external agencies and organizations including, but not limited to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), California Partnership for Achieving Student Success (Cal-PASS), the National Student Clearinghouse and the California Community College Chancellor's Office to complete student tracking and outcome analyses and meet reporting requirements.
  • Researches and identifies sources of data for assigned projects. Gathers, compiles, verifies, analyzes, and correlates information and presents data in graphic, tabular, written, and oral forms.
  • Communicates with appropriate internal and external users in compilation, analysis, and interpretation of data.
  • Provides technical support regarding research design, survey development, and test validation.
  • Responds to data/research requests or questions for information regarding research-related activities.
  • Assists with the training of employees and/or assistants.
  • Identifies and extracts a variety of requested data from Banner, the COS Data Warehouse, College Extended Information System (CEIS), learning assessment and planning management system, and State and national/federal electronic/online data sources, and supports the District's efforts to ensure data integrity.
  • Administers previously developed survey instruments/questionnaires through online methods and Scantron, gathering, summarizing, and distributing results.
  • Compiles and reports the results of Student Evaluations regarding Faculty Instruction.
  • Collects, compiles and secures confidential records and reports.
  • Updates and maintains information on the District's active Institutional Research (IR) Calendar for the Office of Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness.
  • Creates and maintains log and documentation for generated data.
  • Participates in and serves on committees/workgroups/taskforces.
  • Attends meetings, workshops and conferences as assigned.
  • Performs clerical support duties related to the Office of Research, Planning & Institutional Effectiveness and the Office of the President.
  • Will utilize integrated software in performing the required duties of the position.
  • Conducts special projects and performs other related duties as assigned/required.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, economics, sociology, statistics, educational psychology, education research, computer sciences, management information systems, engineering, information technology or a related field.
  • Two years of increasingly responsible experience in the collection, analysis, reporting, and presentation of research, assessment and evaluation data.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications
  • A Master's degree is desirable

Knowledge and Abilities
The hiring committee is seeking evidence of the following:

  • Research, assessment and evaluation theory, design, methodology, survey sampling and analytical techniques.
  • Education trends, practices, and policies, specifically as they pertain to community colleges
  • Data collection and coding
  • Technical research report writing.
  • Research and analytical software applications and tools for data extraction, analysis, data management, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, and word processing software applications (such as Survey Monkey, Banner, Crystal Reports, SPSS (Statistical Package Social Science), Tableau, Power BI, Access, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Qualitative and quantitative data analyses techniques.
  • Inferential and descriptive statistics.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Telephone techniques and etiquette.

Ability to:
  • Demonstrate evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of college students, staff and the community.
  • Read, analyze and interpret policy documents/reports.
  • Present information orally to individuals and small groups and to respond to common inquiries.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Operate a variety of office machines including computer terminal, Scantron, scanner, fax machine, copier and other office equipment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships/partnerships with others – both inside and outside the District
  • Conduct research, collect, compile, assemble and report a variety of data and information used for analysis of institutional planning issues, decision-making, trend monitoring, reports and publications.
  • Perform appropriate data analyses (both quantitative and qualitative) and interpret results and findings.
  • Review and verify input and output data to assure accuracy and efficiency, effectiveness and validity.
  • Gather, validate, and interpret data from a wide variety of sources, including literature and online/Internet searches.
  • Establish priorities, plan, and organize a variety of work assignments.
  • Work accurately and independently with minimal supervision while meeting schedules and timelines.
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive and accurate files and records, prepare concise and complete reports.
  • Maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive and privileged material and information.
  • Learn new ideas, procedures, processes, and computer software quickly and independently.
  • Show willingness to participate in cross-training activities; ability to learn quickly and retain new information.

Organization

College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
