Salary Commensurate with Experience and Qualifications

Benefits EligibleYesEligible for OvertimeNoPosition SummaryThe Assistant Director, reporting to the Director of JGSB Student Financial Services, will provide progressive leadership and administrative effectiveness in student financial services (financial aid, VA benefits, etc.), through emphasis on individual attention to students, and a high quality service delivery model.
Education RequiredBachelor's DegreeMajor/DisciplineSubstitution for Education RequirementMay substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of two years of the education requirement.
Education PreferredExperience Required3 yearsType of ExperienceRelated experience in financial aid counseling, student eligibility, and awarding.

Experience Preferred- Experience with Federal and State financial aid/student loans eligibility requirements and regulation
- Knowledge of Borrower-Based Award Year (BBAY) and Standard Award Year (SAY) structures
- Knowledge of Banner (Ellucian) financial aid management system
- Demonstrated ability to conduct need analysis and package student financial aid
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to exercise tact and discretion when dealing with students, families, and staff
- Expertise in counseling and working with students individually, ability to provide excellent customer service in difficult situations
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage time and workflow and to manage multiple, concurrent high priority projects in a time-pressured environment
- Demonstrated understanding and ability to explain University policy to others, detailed knowledge of financial aid regulations
- Knowledge of multiple financial aid systems, document management systems, and window based environment and office applications
- Demonstrated analytical and quantitative skills, good judgment
- Must have a flexible attitude, and be able to function well as part of a team in a high volume, high-demand environment, pressured environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to manage multiple priorities under established time constraints
Internal: Work closely with JGSB Recruiting & Admissions, Student Programs Office, and Rice Office of Financial Aid.
External: Extensive interaction with prospective and admitted students to all JGSB programs offered.
Physical DemandsAbility to work at a computer for extended periods of up to eight hours per day.
Working ConditionsMust be able and willing to work extended hours and weekends during peak
processing (April-October, January-February). Work in a fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions to work flow; interaction with a diverse group of people, occasional travel for training or meetings during the year.
- Actively partners with Recruiting and Admissions to analyze applications and completes need analysis for a high volume of financial aid applications
- Reviews detailed financial documents, including tax returns, for accuracy of reported financial information
- Reviews appeals on changes in student or family financial condition
- Determines student awards based on computed financial need and other factors, adjust budget and package based on special circumstances
- Communicates complex financial and other information to students and parents
- Reviews a wide variety of reports to identify changes or conflicting data in financial systems
- Processes aid for effective allocation of federal, state and institutional resources in financial aid packages by verifying, completing needs analysis and packaging undergraduate and graduate students
- Creates and presents information pertaining to financial aid application procedures and opportunities to prospective / admitted / deposited students, as well as one-on-one counseling of students regarding financial aid procedures and opportunities
- Works directly with students to facilitate solutions and resolves complex issues regarding their financial aid package, verification, satisfactory progress, or other financial aid concerns
- Creates and presents financial aid presentations, both on and off campus
- Actively participates in the recruiting and admissions process and strategy with regard to student financials
- Collaborates with colleagues on the financial aid systems team to assist with systems setup, maintenance, data retrieval and analysis
