St. Lawrence University invites applications for a Senior Graphic Designer position. Reporting to the Director of Visual and Creative Strategy, the senior graphic designer develops a variety of graphic design, illustration and layout work for print and digital media as assigned by the director. The senior graphic designer serves as a lead designer and produces quality design work under tight deadlines with multiple projects and shifting priorities.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Within the University Communications office, this position:

  • Demonstrates a strong ability to conceptualize, design and create design solutions that uphold the University personality and identity for a diverse set of audiences as directed by the director of visual and creative strategy
  • Demonstrates creative problem-solving skills and strong artistic design, color and typography sensibilities in all media
  • Supervises the creative services specialist position
  • Works with the on-campus and off-campus printing facilities, assuring that all projects are completed with high quality and within desired timeframes and budgets
  • Designs materials that reflect St. Lawrence University’s style, standards and branding
  • Assists with the maintenance of a strong visual brand identity and brand personality for the University and serve as a campus resource for questions about the visual brand.
  • Consult with campus partners on all aspects of projects, including planning, content, layout, turnaround time, corrections, approvals, and project estimates.
  • Work in close collaboration with other members of the communications team to recommend visual and creative solutions.
  • Utilize with project management software to ensure projects stay on time
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 – 5 years of work experience as a graphic designer, with a focus on the development and production of print materials
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, marketing, advertising or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Higher education experience preferred
  • Creative thinker with experience using Adobe Creative Suite for Mac OS, particularly InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop to design print and digital materials
  • Proven ability to bring each project from initial concepts to final printed piece
  • Ability to think ‘editorially’ as a designer, demonstrating an understanding that words as well as images are crucial to the overall function of good visual storytelling
  • Understanding of four-color press and digital printing processes, and preparing and packaging design files for print
  • Self-starter who excels at working independently, but also works nimbly and calmly in a highly collaborative, deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to give and receive constructive design direction
  • Superior attention to detail and thoroughness
  • Ability to make excellent design decisions that align with copy and other aspects of communications projects
  • Strong organizational skills to manage several projects simultaneously, and ability to bring each project from initial concept to completion
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills to interface with a broad range of college administrators, staff, and external vendors, printers, and designers
