The Grounds and Building Services Unit provides campus wide programs and services and support for the University’s 2000+ acres of campus landscape, 42,000 square feet of buildings and the 33,000 students and 7500 Faculty and Staff that make up the campus population. These programs and services include landscape construction and maintenance, comprehensive waste and recycling programs and services and management of the University’s auto shop and motor fleet. Revenue supported programs and services are provided to: Transportation, Housing, Dining, Athletics, Campus Recreation and individual colleges and departments.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the Horticultural Specialist position is to provide hands-on technical expertise and instruction in applied horticultural sciences in order to improve the care and culture of the diverse plant life within the NC State University campus. This person will fill in for Supervisor, in the event of supervisor’s absence.

Primary job duties include:

  • Serves as the point of contact and coordinates work between Landscape and General Shop.
  • Participates in all pre-planning meetings and schedules accordingly with both field supervisors.
  • Responsible for managing field operations.
  • Coordinates the procurement and scheduled use of resources such as labor,equipment, and materials to ensure maximum use and completion of work within budget, safety guidelines and quality standards.
  • Serves as landscape supervisor’s guide and mentor field staff and assist them in carrying out their duties.
  • Serves as the primary interface between the customer and the crew.
  • Supports supervisor in developing a project plan, quality assurance plan, and a safety plan.
  • Recommends cost reduction initiatives while maintaining quality and productivity
  • Acts as the Quality Assurance Liaison for Landscape Construction Services within Grounds Management and Design and Construction Services.
  • Prepares detailed monthly reports to Environmental Health & Safety Management of storm-water devices, erosion control methods and silt fencing.
  • Acts as a training resource for department based on knowledge and experience in different aspects of landscape installation.
  • Prepares and oversees all aspects of landscape watering and warranty program.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve plant, turf, erosion and storm-water issues.

The Horticultural Specialist must understand and provide comments on design review to support all landscape functions.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Position serves in a critical role and is essential to the operations of the university. May be required to work during adverse weather conditions and work even if the university closes. Aid in snow removal as directed by supervisors.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License may be required.

Departmental Required Skills

Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.

Position serves in a critical role and employee must work during adverse weather conditions and may be required to work even if the University is closed to normal operations.

Experience in grounds landscape installation, horticulture and/or arboriculture.

Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

A high level of applicable turf and irrigation and trade knowledge.

Three to five years grounds installation, horticulture and/or arboriculture experience.

Required License or Certification

Valid Driver’s License Required.
North Carolina Driver’s License required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.

North Carolina Pesticide License required within 6 months of completion of probationary period and must be maintained throughout employment.
