The Office of Research Commercialization (ORC) has become a national leader in technology transfer and plays a crucial role in this by protecting and promoting University research discoveries and intellectual property, working with and guiding industry partners, and promoting the acceleration of startups. We’re driving economic growth by facilitating the commercialization of research discoveries.

- ORC provides innovators with a wide range of programs and services to protect, market, and license intellectual property developed at NC State. Collaboration with NC State innovators and industry partners has led to the creation of more than 100 startups and 500 commercialized products that benefit society on a local, national, and global scale.
- ORC works with industry partners to assess research for potential commercial success, seek partners who can benefit from new technology, and develop critical relationships that make the technology commercialization process work.
-ORC provides university entrepreneurs with assistance and resources to launch startups and scale businesses based on university innovations.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Commercialization oversees and directs the Office of Research Commercialization (ORC) at NC State University. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will report directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation and serve as a key member of the Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Team.

The Assistant Vice Chancellor is responsible for the strategic management and commercial development of all technologies and intellectual property (IP) arising from NC State’s research enterprise. This includes developing strong ties with industry to support technology licensing activities, providing strategic direction for the negotiation of license agreements and other contracts managed by the ORC, developing strategies to support technology scouting and development, and the formation of startup companies around NC State technology platforms. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will ensure that all university IP is managed in a manner consistent with the Patent and Tangible Property Policy, as well as the Copyright Regulation. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will also ensure IP related compliance with obligations arising from research funded by federal agencies, nonprofits and corporations. S/He will also develop IP practices that are supportive of attracting increased corporate research funding.

S/He is responsible for administering the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund (CIF) to support short-term commercially-focused research projects. This involves overseeing a process to select the technologies with the greatest commercial potential, and connecting former and existing CIF awardees with mentors and advisors to support them as they work to commercialize their technologies.

S/He will serve as an engagement leader between NC State and the regional entrepreneurial and investment ecosystem in order to support new venture development and economic growth. This includes developing new mechanisms to connect emerging NC State startup companies with regional entrepreneurial mentors, and developing pathways to facilitate investments in NC State startup companies. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will serve on the Wolfpack Investor Network Steering Committee. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will work to raise the profile of the ORC and to promote NC State as a leader in the commercialization of research discoveries.

The Assistant Vice Chancellor will lead a dynamic team of Licensing Associates, Licensing Analysts, and administrative professionals in providing technology development and intellectual property support services to the university community, including faculty, faculty leadership, administrators, postdoctoral fellows and students.

Minimum Education/Experience

Required qualifications include an MS, MBA, or JD and a minimum of seven (7) years experience in research commercialization/technology transfer.

Departmental Required Skills

Candidates must have at least five (5) years of demonstrated leadership and professional experience in a role with new ventures/startup support program and in research commercialization and/or economic development

Proven ability to build collaborative partnerships with leaders, campus partners, and external constituents

Strong leadership skills with the ability to attract, motivate, coach, and develop a high performing work team and foster a diverse and inclusive work environment

Demonstrated project management, written and verbal communication skills and fiscal management experience

Demonstrate the ability to express and convey complex ideas

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Experience with large and complex grant writing (including I-Corps)

Experience with financial reporting systems and databases (i.e. KSS, PeopleSoft, Smart Sheets, etc.)

Experience with Small Business Technology Development Centers and Angel Investing
