Associate Director Annual Giving, Participation

Job description


Reporting to the Executive Director of Annual Giving, the Associate Director for Annual Giving, Participation plays a critical role in working to advance the participation rates of Reunion classes, coordinating closely with Annual Giving colleagues, alumni volunteers, Advancement, Development and campus colleagues.


The Associate Director, Participation must demonstrate strong performance and experience as a manager of volunteer teams, project manager and development team member.


Principal Duties:

  • Manage and track the participation-focused activities for major Reunion classes and underperforming Reunion classes, in coordination with AG colleagues, and staff the volunteers
  • Work closely with volunteer leaders to coordinate the efforts of the classes to maximize the effectiveness of participation activities
  • Recruit, coordinate and motivate volunteers to engage potential class donors most effectively
  • Understand fully the mission and needs of the University and articulate them effectively to potential donors, volunteers, and other staff members
  • Prepare briefings and other reports for volunteers, campus partners, and the University’s files
  • Use technology effectively to research, organize, analyze and present data
  • Analyze and synthesize data and information gathered from a variety of sources (electronic, printed, and people) in support of Annual Giving programs.
  • Produce reports which are clear and cogent and which support planning and decision-making for staff and volunteers

Essential Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, with 2-4 years of related experience, preferably in annual giving
  • Understanding philanthropy (mission, practice, trends) and fundraising practices (the development cycle, prospect and volunteer management policies and practices)
  • Understanding the University’s mission, culture, and fundraising priorities
  • Ability to assess the capacity and inclination of potential donors
  • Knowledge of the principles of fundraising and a demonstrated track record of success and innovation
  • The highest standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by collaborative teamwork, initiative, critical thinking, good judgment, consistency of output, timeliness of follow-through and strength of written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and command the respect of colleagues, volunteers and donors
  • Demonstrated ability to participate meaningfully and creatively in goal setting, long- and short-term strategic planning, and problem-solving
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to set clear priorities and manage time well; the ability to work independently and make sound judgments about prospects, project management responsibilities, and all other areas of performance without close day-to-day supervision
  • Evidence of leadership ability as represented by experience as a project facilitator, meeting planner and effectiveness in working with diverse individuals in a team-oriented environment
  • Exercise discretion at all times, able to keep confidential all data related to Princeton and its alumni
  • Demonstrated success in motivating people especially volunteers and to inspire donors to make annual gifts
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the values and mission of Princeton and higher education


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a front-line staffer
  • Experience in higher education, alumni relations and/or volunteer management
  • Familiarity with Princeton University or a similar university
