Senior Fire Protection Engineer - Planning & Facilities Management

The incumbent serves as an expert resource to Planning & Facilities Management for fire protection engineering as well as proper management and oversight of the fire protection suppression systems, fire alarm systems, and related utilities to ensure reliable & cost effective equipment operation, and code compliance. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Performs investigations and identifies equipment and operational deficiencies.
  • Develops engineering solutions and implements necessary programs for corrective action and code compliance.
  • Keeps current with technology updates through research and training.
  • Provides technical interface with fire & life safety consultants, contractors, and in-house trades staff regarding preventive maintenance and operational initiatives.
  • Provides training to in-house staff regarding proper maintenance techniques and equipment operation.
  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for fire and life safety equipment operations and maintenance.
  • Prepares technical design specifications for bids and evaluates bid proposals. Manages operations fire and life safety projects and programs which have complex features, from the concept stage through the development of construction documents or program implementation.
  • Provides direction and coordination of project teams comprised of clients, consultant architects and engineers, code officials, construction managers, contractors, O&M personnel, contracting specialists, and fellow project managers.
  • Obtains and assists in the solicitation of project approvals from internal University entities, appropriate government agencies, and community interest groups.
  • Develops and ensures adherence to project budgets, schedules, quality standards, and code requirements.
  • Conducts or solicits on-site inspections of all aspects of assigned projects to evaluate consultant and contractor performance and confirm satisfactory progression of work.
  • Performs designs of small fire and life safety projects, resolving problems involving the principles or practice of conceptual planning within the context of Master Planning, and the application of CADD proficiency relating to development of facilities planning studies, problem solving, and manipulation of data base information for development of reports as well as oral and written presentations.
  • Performs special project activities requiring application of technical expertise to the development of solutions to unusually difficult problems as assigned.

Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering or similar engineering discipline from an accredited program
  • Five to ten years of progressively responsible experience as a Fire Protection Project Engineer managing preventive maintenance activities, operational programs, and facilities improvement projects in a campus setting
  • General office computer programs, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Computer literate with specific knowledge of CADD and MS Project or other software (e.g. Primavera, etc.)
  • State Registration as an Engineer is preferred
  • Required to carry a smartphone and respond to inquiries as needed (including off-hours if emergencies arise)

In performance of duties, there is some walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling or lifting involved in activities such as conducting on-site field surveys. During field surveys and site visits, the employee may have to walk over or about rough terrain or construction, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend or crawl to inspect or observe situations.
