Supervision Received: The Staff Associate/Area Coordinator receives supervision from the Associate Director for Staff Development.
Supervision Exercised: Supervises professional and paraprofessional staff.
Salary: $38,000-$40,000, commensurate with experience and education

General Statement of Duties:

The Staff Associate/Area Coordinator (AC) plays a critical role in promoting the success and well-being of residents, and in achieving the goals and objectives of the Department of Residential Life and the Division of Student Affairs.

The AC is comprehensively involved in the total community development of the residence hall, assisting residents with a full array of personal, developmental, academic and residency issues. The AC advises the hall council, supervises professional and paraprofessional staff members, and serves as a vital communication link between residents, the department, and the University community. The AC also provides crucial support, on-site response and information on student matters both within and outside the Department of Residential Life.

Area Coordinator activities fall into three primary areas:

  • Foundations: establishing staffing, information and systems to promote effective, efficient hall operations;
  • Services: supporting residents' varied needs and responding to routine and crisis situations promptly and comprehensively;
  • Education: providing intentional outreach to residents to support and supplement their in-class experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but not limited to:

  1. Support the educational mission and goals of the Department of Residential Life, the Division of Student Affairs, and the University. Assist with developing, achieving and assessing department goals and objectives.
  2. Serve as a student advocate and educator, helping residents to be positive and responsible members of the residential community. Be available and accessible to students as necessary, and advise students on issues related to on-campus residency and their personal, social and academic development.
  3. Serve in assigned on-call duty rotation by responding to after hours and weekend emergencies in accordance with the University and department's emergency response procedures.
  4. Guide the overall management of assigned residential area. Provide direct supervision and evaluation for professional Residence Director(s) and/or Assistant Residence Director. Develop positive, professional and effective working relationships within residential areas and with all members of the Residential Life professional staff team.
  5. Advise the hall council, providing regular contact including attendance at meetings and events; offering support, guidance, and leadership and skill development activities; and promoting the formation of a cohesive, effective group. Support the initiatives of the area's Hall Councils and the Residence Hall Association.
  6. Develop a highly competent and committed building staff team through training, supervising, mentoring and evaluating staff members. Conduct weekly building staff meetings and at least bi-weekly individual supervision meetings. Promote effective student staff relationships and teamwork within the residential area.
  7. Coordinate overall management of the hall, including facilitating room changes, managing keys, damage and incident reporting and tracking, and on-site monitoring of hall security facilities and maintenance matters. Work effectively with the Assistant Director for Housing or designee. Promote effective operations within the residential area.
  8. Offer quality residence hall programs and services that meet identified resident and campus needs; and provide these programs and services in an effective, efficient manner. Track RA staff and Hall Council programming initiatives, including budget. Work effectively with the Assistant Director for Residence Education and First Year Programs in meeting the area's programmatic needs.
  9. Represent Residential Life on University committees and functions; lead and/or assist with Residential Life projects, functions and initiatives; and perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or designee.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three or more years of full-time experience in a residential life setting.
  • Master's degree earned within a year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.

Specific salary for current Westfield State University employees and individuals currently working for the state of Massachusetts must be calculated individually in accordance with collective bargaining and state policies and procedures.
