Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean for Curriculum, Scheduling and Student Affairs, the incumbent will work as part of the advising team to provide academic advisement for College of Arts and Sciences students. They will serve as College of Arts & Sciences representatives at summer opportunities for advising and registration (SOAR) and during student recruitment events (Leo Fridays, Spotlight weekend).

Specific Duties:
  • Provides one-on-one advisement; facilitating group advising workshops; engaging in e-advising; developing and implementing targeted advising campaigns; and harnessing best practices in academic advisement and student success to support the University’s retention and graduation goals.
  • The incumbent will works with CAS departments and programs to identify student success plans that align with the students’ major and career pathways; advise on academic program declaration and change; monitor student degree progress; and keep current on University policies and procedures, including maintaining in-depth knowledge of General Education and College degree requirements.
  • The incumbent is expected to develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate specialized academic advising programs, services, and workshops using professional resources and/or literature.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the disciplines housed in the College (https://artsci.laverne.edu/programs/).
  • Equivalent of a least two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Must have the ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures of the university in relation to assisting students; gather and analyze data to inform advising interventions and campaigns; draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations related to campus stakeholders; and exercise tact, courtesy, alertness, and good judgement when responding to others.
  • Must also have the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work; multi-task, complete assignments in a timely fashion, and work under pressure; and be computer literate and proficient in standard word processing and database software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint.
  • Demonstrate ability and interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in related discipline.
  • Experience working on a college campus, preferably as an academic advisor.
  • Experience with Degree Audit, Banner 9, Blackboard, and Campus Labs.
