The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits. Depending upon qualifications, the anticipated hiring annual salary range is $75,000 - $78,000.

The Director of Development for College of Science and Mathematics reports to the Associate Vice President for University Development, in close cooperation with the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, and is a member of the University Advancement team. The incumbent is responsible for managing and facilitating the College of Science and Mathematics efforts in fund raising. The Director of Development is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Director, in partnership with the Dean, will plan and implement development and campaign strategies on behalf of the College of Science and Mathematics, including providing staff support to one or more volunteer groups.

The College of Science and Mathematics focuses on authentic science experiences and offers over 3,600 students' rich opportunities for innovative laboratory research, fieldwork and community-based learning experiences. The college graduates the next generation of scientists and mathematicians, teachers, technicians, health professionals and field researchers who provide solutions to real-world, interdisciplinary challenges facing the Central Valley. The college hosts seven departments ranging from biology to psychology and seven Centers/Institutes including the Science and Math Education Center, Cancer Research and Training and Downing Planetarium. Faculty offer cutting-edge research opportunities for students and support groundbreaking instruction across interdisciplinary curriculum. In the 2016-17 academic year, faculty and students co-authored 186 publications and made 338 conference presentations. Some of the key areas of research include cancer treatment, environmental science, biomedical physics and bioinformatics. Full-time tenure-track faculty in the college has grown 24% over the past five years, from 84 to 104. The college aims to expand its teaching and research opportunities by recruiting innovative new faculty and establishing state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities. In doing so, research that directly impacts our region and provides opportunities for student success will continue being the core focus of the college.

Position Summary:
The major duties of the job include:

  • Participate as a member of the College of Science and Mathematics advancement team. Attend regular meetings with the Dean of the school/college/area to discuss progress on reaching and identifying new advancement goals;
  • Liaison to Campus Units: Frequently interacts with the Vice President for University Advancement, AVP for Development, College of Science and Mathematics Dean, University Vice Presidents, and other Senior Administrators to identify projects for private fundraising;
  • Prospect Identification: Occasionally reviews annual giving records, public information and volunteer suggestions for likely major gift prospects;
  • Prospect Qualification: Frequently meets with prospects to assess their capacity and propensity for major gifts;
  • Prospect Cultivation: Frequently plans and implements strategic steps to move prospects toward a major gift decision;
  • Prospect Solicitation: Frequently develops and presents major gift proposals to prospects;
  • Principal Gifts: Occasionally works with senior administrators to develop prospect strategies and proposals for gifts greater than $250,000;
  • Donor Stewardship: Regularly interacts with donors to ensure good stewardship of gifts received;
  • Special Events: Occasionally organizes and presents special events designed to engage prospects;
  • Boards and Volunteer Engagement: Frequently interacts with volunteer leaders and boards to engage them in the mission of the College of Science and Mathematics;
  • Annual Fundraising: Occasionally manages college based solicitations and special campaigns, interfaces often with central Annual Giving office on strategies and scripts for solicitation.

    Secondary duties of the job include:
  • College Support: Occasionally works on projects not directly related to fundraising at the direction of the Associate Vice President for Development;
  • University wide representation: Occasionally works on projects outside of the assigned school/college as directed by the Associate Vice President;
  • Support and/or lead fundraising efforts for mini-campaigns and comprehensive campaigns.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated track record in working with individuals and groups, ability to work as a member of a team, recognition of the importance of education to individuals and society as a whole
  • Exposure to management, including budgetary responsibilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communication skills
  • Highly motivated and proven self-starter, creative and entrepreneurial characteristics
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the university from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Flexibility to travel as needed to develop and maintain relationships
  • Competency and experience with the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and the internet
  • History of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations

    Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required from a regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum of four years of increasingly responsible and successful fundraising experience or professional experience with transferable skills such as sales, marketing or public relations
  • Experience with a nonprofit organization
  • Experience with capital/comprehensive campaigns and/or specific experience in major gift solicitation, corporate/foundation relations or constituent relations

    Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master's or other advance degree preferred
  • Experience/background in higher education
  • Experience with alumni/donor databases and campus applications such as Advance, Reeher or Raiser's Edge
