The Director of Graduate Student Financial Support unit serves as a member of the Dean’s Cabinet and senior adviser to the Dean of Graduate Division, advising and providing analytical support and leadership on graduate student financial support and employment to the campus.
Responsible for planning, managing, and directing the administration of very large graduate student merit-based aid and academic employment funds of up to $40M for UC San Diego and providing outstanding services to faculty, staff, and students. Develops, implements, administers, and evaluates policies and practices for the smooth and efficient delivery of student financial support services.
Consults with and advises faculty, students, and campus administrators, works closely with academic and administrative departments, and collaborates with the Graduate Division management team on graduate student financial support and broader graduate education matters. Develops short-term and long-term strategies for graduate student financial support, including maximizing extramural support and ensuring that campus funds are equitably distributed to support the entire breadth of graduate education at UC San Diego.
Through analysis and innovation, the Director addresses and resolves complex graduate student financial support issues and problems. Oversees the direct fund management, distribution to UC San Diego graduate students, and reporting of fellowship, traineeship, and tuition-and-fee payments. Manages unit staff, an administrative budget, and numerous systems applications in support of the above functions.

A Bachelor's Degree in related area with experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education.
Expert resource management experience, including knowledge of accounting principles and methods, to supervise and direct the management of Graduate Division graduate student financial support funds and oversee the administration of campus graduate student financial support funds.
Advanced analytical/problem-solving skills. Superior analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to think creatively and innovatively in addressing large-scale campus student financial support issues. Assist programs in resolving complex departmental financial support problems, and resolve difficult student financial problems.
Advanced project management skills. Strong organizational skills to manage and oversee the performance and functions of the Graduate Student Financial Support Unit, ensuring critical tasks are performed accurately, in a timely manner, with a high degree of quality service to the UCSD community.
Advanced knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs. Strong knowledge of systems and processes sufficient to utilize various computer software and develop streamlined procedures for graduate student financial support administration.
Demonstrated expertise in applying advanced computer technology as a problem-solving tool in financial modeling, analysis, budgetary management, and other administrative functions and solutions.
Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. Strong knowledge of doctoral education, graduate education issues, and graduate student financial support policies and issues.
Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols and procedures. Demonstrated management and supervisory experience, including ability to manage a complex function and foster cooperation, teamwork, and employee potential.
Proven ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Effective planning skills to develop graduate student financial support plans, develop new policies, processes, and systems, implement efficient management strategies for student financial support.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing. Excellent verbal communication skills to communicate clearly, accurately, and persuasively.
Ability to develop and conduct effective training and informational programs. Strong written communication skills to write reports, memoranda, policy statements, issue directives, procedures, and instructions.
- Previous UC experience or comparable experience with understanding of university-level governance and organizational structure.
