The OCLS Online Librarian is an integral member of the Off Campus Library Services team. This position serves the information literacy, information teaching, and research needs of Indiana Wesleyan University’s (IWU’s) National and Global Campus students and faculty. OCLS team members work directly with the College of Adult and Professional Studies, School of Health Science, School of Nursing (post-licensure and graduate), and Wesley Seminary at Indiana Wesleyan University to realize IWU’s mission of changing the world by developing students in character, scholarship, and leadership. Off Campus Library Services is seeking individuals who will work with diverse clientele, stakeholders, and colleagues.

This successful candidate is expected to maintain an office at the Indianapolis North Education Center a minimum of 3 days per week.

Reporting Relationships:

The OCLS Online Librarian reports to the Director of Off Campus Library Services

Education Requirements:

  • Graduate degree from an ALA accredited library and information science program required; second master's degree desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the OCLS Director s/he will be responsible for an assigned segment of online embedded classes, especially those in most need of academic support.
  • Provide reference services to Indiana Wesleyan University National & Global students and faculty as assigned.
  • Subject expertise in education and religion (preferred); health sciences and medical sciences (desired).
  • Responsible for library instruction as assigned in any modality (in person, online, or through hybrid delivery methods).
  • Work with colleagues, faculty, Regional Education Center staff to provide ongoing value-added learning and professional development sessions, workshops, and academic support opportunities to National & Global students and faculty.
  • Assist the OCLS Director (and/or his/her designee) to identify and recommend existing library resources and suitable Open Educational Resources (OER) for use in National & Global courses.
  • Ability to assist students and faculty with a variety of software and hardware issues, including library databases, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, APA Academic Writer, Grammarly, Zoom web conferencing software, etc.
  • Proficient in understanding and teaching academic writing and citation styles, especially APA and Chicago Style.
  • Managing paper editing (basic grammar, proofreading, and citation and documentation styles).
  • Participation in OCLS team responsibilities.
  • Participation in National & Global or university councils, committees, etc., as assigned.
  • Understanding of copyright and how it relates to the online classroom.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior experience (desired); three (3) to five (5) or more years of prior experience preferred
  • Experience in providing professional reference service in an academic setting using emerging web-based and traditional reference technologies
  • Demonstration of excellent oral and written communication and teaching skills for adult students
  • Demonstration of a strong commitment to public services
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively
  • Ability to hold a valid, university approved license for offsite teaching and Marion/National & Global campus visits

Preferred skills:

  • Experience using and implementing Open Educational Resources (OER)
  • Specific professional reference experience with education and religion
  • Information literacy teaching and resource development
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish

Desired skills:

  • Strong understanding of computer hardware/software used to distribute information electronically
  • Experience with providing library services for distant learners
  • Specific professional reference experience in nursing and business
