Supervision Received: The Dean of Students receives direct supervision from the Vice President for Student Affairs.
Supervision Exercised: The Dean of Students exercises supervision over the Directors of Career Services, Counseling Services, Health Services, Residential Engagement, Student Conduct, and the Administrative Assistant to the Dean.
General Statement of Duties:
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA), the Dean of Students (DoS) is a strategic partner for the Division of Student Affairs with a focus on enhancing the student experience and increasing student success. The DoS will promote opportunities for students to raise awareness, understanding of differences, collaboration of cross-culture groups, and foster a sense of communal relationship among all students. The DoS is responsible for the supervision of Residence Life, Career Services, Student Conduct, Counseling Services and Health Services. This position serves as the senior crisis administrator available to administrators-on-call responding to student life emergencies. The DoS will assist the Vice President in providing vision, leadership, and strategic direction to ensure the delivery of effective and quality service to students. The DoS will provide executive presence in the leadership of the division across functions in the absence of, and as assigned by, the VPSA.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but not limited to:
- Unites the distinctive functions under the DoS's purview to leverage resources, services, and programming.
- Evaluates and measures success of the departments of Career Services, Counseling Services, Health Services, Residential Engagement and Student Conduct.
- Manages the departmental leaders, holding them accountable for results of: individual and shared goals; coordination and collaboration within Student Affairs and community stakeholders; and commitment to excellence.
- Serves as a co-chair for the Westfield State Experience, working closely with Academic Affairs and other Divisions on planning, implementation and assessment of this signature program.
- Provides senior line contact and problem resolution for parents, students and others to assist in optimizing the student's educational experience.
- Serves as the Senior Conduct Officer, overseeing the management of the student conduct system.
- Chairs the University's STAT (Student Threat Assessment Team) designated to assess individual students who are at risk or threat to the campus; chairs the divisional case management team designed to assist and follow through with students displaying at-risk behaviors.
- Serves as a resource for other members of the University community in regard to student life issues; serves as a resource for faculty regarding classroom student concerns.
- Acts as the primary liaison for Student Affairs with the Student Government Association (SGA).
- Acts as the senior crisis administrator available to administrators-on-call and coordinate response to student life emergencies.
- Assists the Vice President with division publications including division newsletter and annual report.
- Assists the Vice President in managing personnel issues within the division.
- Assists the Vice President in budget development and budget management within the division.
- Maintains various confidential student records and acts as a campus resource relative to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)/student record keeping practices.
- Works in partnership with the Vice President in leading the division in assessment efforts and assists the Vice President in strategic planning and evaluation of departments within the division.
- Fills various Title IX roles, which may include serving as a Deputy Coordinator and/or Investigator, as needed.
- Represents the Student Affairs division on the University Academic Appeals Committee.
- Acts as the division liaison with University legal counsel relative to student life matters and inquiries.
- Represents the Student Affairs division on campus-wide committees which may include the Institutional Assessment Committee, the Enrollment Management Committee, and other committees as assigned.
- Administers the student Presidential Awards for Excellence in Leadership and the Dining Services Scholarship Program.
- Other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Student Affairs.
- Master's degree required. Doctorate preferred.
- Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in Student Affairs and Student Conduct at the director level or above.
- Strong leadership skills that promote dedication, creativity, innovation and growth.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various university and other constituencies.
- Proven crisis management experience.
- Ability to effectively manage and oversee multiple areas/assignments.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally.
- Knowledge of student development theories and practices.
- Skill in employee development and performance management.
- Extensive knowledge of due process procedures.
