Job Description Summary

This position is responsible for researching, monitoring, and analyzing diseases. The epidemiologist will educate Campus Health, Student Health Service, and the larger division of University Life on ways to promote wellness, control outbreaks, and prevent disease. The functions of this position include:
•Collecting and analyzing data through field research, observation, questionnaires and studies;
•Identifying disease patterns to create and influence interventions;
•Using statistical software to analyze the information and reporting out the findings;
•Monitoring and reporting various communicable conditions required by the City, State and Federal public health authorities; and
•Supporting ongoing health and wellness programs

This position will allow for involvement in numerous activities such as assessment, programming (including outreach), education, intervention, grant writing and research.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage databases for disease surveillance; regularly report trend analysis.
  • Perform routine analysis from multiple data sets, including electronic medical record systems, and national and university-based surveys. 
  • Write reports and present findings to inform University and Wellness colleagues, and outside agencies, on public health response for, and overall health of, Penn students.
  • Provide in-service training for faculty, staff and administrators as it relates to disease prevention.
  • Investigation, surveillance, and reporting of a wide variety of conditions that negatively impact the well-being of the Penn community.
  • Assist in the management of contact investigation and intervention activities.
  • Identify grant and research opportunities for health and wellness initiatives.
  • Write applications and apply for identified grants and funding sources at the local, state and national level.
  • Support research activities for Campus Health and other wellness departments within the division of the Vice Provost for University Life.
  • Author manuscripts, abstracts, and scientific posters to report findings that would benefit the broader scientific community.
  • Act as liaison to a variety of campus partners, UPHS, and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. Participate in relevant on-campus committees, and public health professional organizations.

Qualifications:


A Master’s degree in Public Health or related field with a minimum of 1-2 years’ of relevant experience is required. Proficiency with data management/analysis software (SAS, SPSS, Stata, Tableau, or comparable) and data management software (MS Access or Excel) preferred. Requires meticulous attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, ability to work well in a team setting and utilize new technologies. Ability to be a self‐starter is essential. Demonstrated background in prevention work, with a high degree of multicultural awareness required. Experience and comfort with clinical and interdisciplinary collaboration is a plus. Candidates with medical record system experience preferred.
