Peer Tutor

 

Job Purpose:

To facilitate student learning by (a) helping to clarifyspecific course content and (b) promoting/modeling the use of appropriate studystrategies as well as writing techniques and habits

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Tutors are expected to participate in training sessions andmeetings, as requested (compensation will be provided).
2. Tutors will meet with students in the Learning Commons area of the LongLibrary.
3. Under no circumstances should a tutor do a student’s work for him/her.Sessions should always be collaborative in nature. Tutors will not writepapers, review books or prepare work for a student. A tutor may guide, directand offer assistance in organizing a paper or assignment, but the student mustdo his/her own work. The tutor may cancel and/or terminate the tutoringrelationship if the tutee presses the tutor to do his/her work.
4. Tutors should inform and/or consult with the Coordinator of the WritingCenter if they encounter any problems or need any type of assistance relating totheir tutoring situation.
5. Tutors must maintain scheduled hours. If a tutor is unable to attend atutoring session, s/he should notify the Coordinator of the Writing Center inadvance.
6. Tutors are expected to respect students’ rights to confidentiality andfollow legal guidelines regarding dispersal of information.
7. Tutors are expected to act as a representative for the tutoring programwithin the campus community.
8. Tutors must maintain detailed records and maintain sign-in sheets todocument activities.

 

Job Qualifications:

Required:
1. Tutors must have obtained and maintain a grade of B+ (3.3) or higher in thesubject(s) which they intend to tutor and have at least a 3.0 cumulative gradepoint average.
2. Tutors must submit a written recommendation from a faculty member in thesubject area(s) to be tutored (recommendation form provided upon request from skorgan@wells.edu)

3. Tutors submit a writing sample. The sample does not need tobe from the subject area they are requesting to tutor in, but should be anexample of their best work. The sample should be academic in nature, but tutorsmay submit a secondary creative writing sample if they desire. 
3. Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds as well asunder-prepared, special needs, and multi-lingual students.

4. Ability to provide some assistance with test-takingstrategies, note taking skills, and time management.
5. Relevant experience that demonstrates the ability to work well withstudents/peers and leadership skills.
6. Availability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
