Overview

The Department of Chemistry seeks an energetic and collaborative Communications Specialist to promote faculty research and the objectives and priorities of the department. This individual will manage overall communications strategies for the department, including web, social media and print materials. The CS will take a key role in the editorial management of the department’s website, editing and enhancing current material, while developing and writing new content. A core responsibility will be to develop pieces on current faculty research and forthcoming publications.

 

This is a one-year, full-time, term position, with possibility of renewal.  

 

Candidates are asked to submit a cover letter, resume and science writing sample.  

Responsibilities

This individual will conceptualize, write and edit scientific and informational content for the department’s website, social media, and other publications, as well as partner in video production. They will also respond to media inquiries, and assists with event publicity, editorial support and outreach. In addition, this individual will assist in developing and editing faculty research proposals to ensure they read well, are appealing and respond to the sponsor’s parameters. Will help faculty and researchers to identify corporate and foundation resources for funding. The specialist will liaise with colleagues in the Office of Communications and communicators across campus.

 

The Communications Specialist must be capable of conveying scientific research in a clear and compelling way to both scientific and non-scientific audiences. Candidate must be extremely well organized, exhibit exceptional attention to detail and be able to troubleshoot and multitask. They will focus on departmental priorities and work in a collaborative manner to support overall departmental goals.

Qualifications

The Communications Specialist must have 3 to 5 years of experience as a science writer, journalist or in an equivalent communications setting. Candidates must be able to demonstrate exceptional communications skills, including written and verbal, have the ability to understand complex information and quickly translate it for scientific peer and lay audiences, work well with a diversity of people, take positive and proactive approaches to tasks and work in a collaborative manner in an academic setting. Must have strong personal initiative, be able to manage competing priorities and adhere to deadlines. A bachelor's degree is required.

 

Proficiency in Microsoft desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), web publishing (Drupal, WordPress), and social media platforms.  Preference will be given to candidates who have higher education experience in a research setting; an advanced degree in the natural sciences or equivalent professional experience; familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style. Social media experience, a plus.

 

Above all, they must be an expert communicator, including an excellent writer, editor and proofreader.
