Student Support Specialist (2 positions)

These are 3-year fixed term positions which may be extended if funding continues.

The Health Promotion Services Department (soon to be Well-Being at Stanford) at Vaden Health Center is looking to hire two Student Support Specialists (SSS) to support students in need of mid-level, non-clinical support. These positions will work with students to identify life goals, facilitate personal growth, build coping skills and resilience, promote engagement in campus community, and provide support with respect to other personal and academic concerns, as needed.

The SSS positions will focus their service on students who can benefit from non-clinical interventions such as: acquiring new coping skills, stress management, positive support, problem-solving, support groups, or personal coaching. These challenges may include: non-clinical levels of depressive symptoms, stress, anxiety, grief and loss, interpersonal conflict, relationship issues, adjustment issues, lack of confidence, procrastination, and an intersection of these themes with students' personal identity and development.

The SSS positions will collaborate with campus partners and student affairs colleagues to develop and provide relevant/timely programs and services to students. These may include developing and leading support groups, workshops, informational sessions as well as individual meetings with students. These non-clinical interventions will be student-centered and issue-based with goals of personal empowerment, well-being, and success through positive support and skill-enhancement. These positions will function as a cohort of three professionals who will each serve a distinct segment of the Stanford student community, including: graduate students, undergraduate students, and students who reside in the community centers/ethnic theme houses.

Student Support Specialist for Undergraduates Students
The SSS for undergraduate students will work closely with residence deans and academic advising directors to serve in a proactive manner, to actively reach out to students, and to serve as a resource to meet student needs before the onset of a crisis or emergency. The SSS will also work closely with undergraduate residence deans to identify, consult about and receive referrals of students who can benefit from support and consultation in their adjustment to undergraduate life, managing relationships, or coping with stress. The SSS for undergraduate students will interface with other colleagues from Student Affairs and Academic Advising. Referral sources to the SSS for undergraduate students may include Residential Education (ResEd), Academic Advising, and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Student Support Specialist for Community Centers and Ethnic Theme Dorms

The SSS for community centers and ethnic theme dorms will work with the 7 community centers and 4 ethnic theme dorms serving a diverse student population including undergraduate and graduate students. The SSS will serve in a proactive manner, actively reach out to students, and serve as a resource to meet student needs before the onset of a crisis or emergency. The SSS will consult about and receive referrals for students who can benefit from support and consultation in their adjustment to school, managing relationships, or coping with stress. The SSS will also work with the center directors in outreach and educational programs. The SSS for community centers and ethnic theme dorms will interface with colleagues from across student affairs, especially from the Graduate Life Office, ResEd, and CAPS; academic programs, Academic Advising, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
Your Responsibilities:

  • Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues, counsel students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues.
    • Receive student referrals related to non-clinical levels of depressive symptoms, stress, anxiety, grief and loss, interpersonal conflict, relationship issues, adjustment issues, lack of confidence, procrastination, and personal identity development. Provide timely follow-up and consultation for students and campus partners.
    • Provide direct service to students including, but not limited to: teaching new coping and other relevant skills, stress management, provide positive support, problem-solving, developing and facilitating support groups, or personal coaching to assist students in addressing non-clinical mental health, personal and interpersonal issues, and making appropriate choices and decisions.
    • Assess and differentiate coping and/or social skills deficit from psychopathology in order to develop individualized behavioral plan for effective support and/or coaching.
    • Provide on-going psychosocial assessment to recognize need for referral for case management and/or clinical treatment.
  • Provide advice to students on a range of issues, in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
  • Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
    • Attend meetings with key partners, as appropriate. Participate in cohort meetings with co-SSS's and develop best practices for meeting, communication, and working with campus partners.
  • Provide guidance and counsel, oversee and develop a wide range of programs and services, analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for future programs.
    • Design methods for assessing work with students and delivering regular reports on student cases, trends, and patterns across the student populations served. Assess student information in multiple databases
    • Develop quarterly reports to capture trends among the students served. These reports will be shared with residence deans, academic advisors, and other campus stakeholders to better understand the mid-level social and emotional needs of students served.
  • Serve as a responsible CSA mandated reporter.
  • Participate in training student staff, designing in-service trainings/workshops throughout the academic year, and develop opportunities for students to engage on topics of wellness/well-being across the residences.
  • Document student cases in the student affairs/dean of students' database in a timely and professional manner.
  • Develop and implement plans for outreach efforts, develop and maintain external community and university liaison represent department and university at meetings and events.
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in one or more of the following fields: social work, mental health care, life coaching, or health and wellness consulting and programming.
  • Knowledgeable of college student mental health issues and diagnoses.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to work proactively to mitigate the potential for a student emergency/crisis by working to consult, discuss, assess student issues, stress, mental health status in order to develop effective support/coaching plan or referral.
  • Demonstrated experience providing personal coaching, developing and facilitating support groups.
  • Understanding of FERPA and privacy laws when working with sensitive student information.
  • Experience serving as a mandated reporter for the purposes of Title IX, Clery Act, and the California Education Code.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.

In addition, our preferred requirements include: Student Support Specialist for Undergraduate Students
  • Prior experience working with undergraduate students on a wide-range of issues related to their social and academic experiences.
  • Experience working with a large student population mostly housed on-campus with some students living off-campus and participating in away programs along with study abroad programs.
  • Experience working with academic programs and faculty.
  • Knowledge of typical undergraduate services across a college campus.

Student Support Specialist for Community Centers and Ethnic Theme Dorms
  • Prior experience working with both graduate and undergraduate students on a wide-range of issues related to their social and academic experiences as it relates to diverse student identities.
  • Experience working with a large range of constituents including students, student leaders, staff, and faculty.
  • Experience applying identity development frameworks and the ability to understand and discuss diversity, inclusion, and social justice concepts.
