Position TypeAdministrative AppointmentClassification TitleDean, LibraryPosition's Functional TitleDean, LibraryPosition Start DatePosition End Date (if temporary)Position Summary

Governors State University seeks a visionary, collaborative leader to serve as the Dean of the Library. The Dean is the chief administrator of the University Library and reports directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The position is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced library administrator to lead the library faculty and staff, serve the students and faculty, and advance the mission and vision of one of Illinois’ public comprehensive universities.

The Dean of the Library is a 12-month administrative position with responsibility for the organization, administration, operation, and evaluations of university library services, physical facilities, faculty, staff, collections and budget. The Dean mentors librarians who are part of the university’s unionized tenure-stream faculty, and supports their work with faculty colleagues across campus. Working with faculty and staff, the Dean enables the University Library to support the institutional mission by developing the library’s collections and services, supporting research and scholarship, engaging emergent technologies, and promoting and advocating for library programs that address the needs of students, staff, faculty, and the community.

The Dean serves on the Deans Council. Convened by the Provost, the Council considers a broad array of areas including strategic initiatives, institutional effectiveness, budgeting, curricular and administrative issues, academic policies and college/Academic Affairs initiatives aimed at enhancing both faculty and student life on campus. As one of the administrators in Academic Affairs, the Dean provides leadership and contributes to academic and student services in close collaboration with Information Technology Services, Digital Learning and Media Design, and the Writing Center.

Outside of the University, the Dean works closely with other Illinois public university deans as well as representing the Library in the community and region, and at the state and national levels.

Governors State University is the only regional public comprehensive university in the Chicago Southland. It serves approximately 5,000 students annually. GSU provides accessible, high-value undergraduate and graduate education to culturally and economically diverse students. GSU students benefit from the university’s high academic quality, range of conventional, hybrid, and online offerings, and outstanding educational value. GSU seeks to become a national leader in transferring community college students to universities through the innovative Kresge Foundation supported Dual Degree Program. GSU offers accredited programs that have earned high praise from accrediting agencies, including several applied doctoral degrees in education and health care disciplines.

Situated in the rapidly growing southern suburbs of Chicago, Governors State University enjoys a 750 acre campus that includes the acclaimed Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park and the Center for Performing Arts. The campus is set amidst vigorous suburban and business growth, with the vibrancy of the Chicago loop just 35 miles away. As the most rapidly developing area of Chicago, the Southland region offers a wide number of affordable housing options along with easy access to urban and rural settings and Lake Michigan activities.
