Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the general direction of the Accounting Manager, CWM, the Sr. Accountant gathers financial data, prepares financial analyses and assists with the preparation of financial statements for presentation to senior management.   Supervises the Financial Assistant working on EHS related data. Other duties include providing analysis and reporting for special projects.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and review monthly closing journal entries and activity
  • Assist with monthly and annual close activities in conjunction with the Director of Finance, the Associate Director of Finance and the UMMS Financial Services team such as preparation or review of account reconciliations
  • Assist in coordinating year-end closing, the financial audit, and State audits
  • Provide accounting analysis and support to departments as required

Agency Reporting

  • Verify payment information provided on check requests prior to EHS issuance of payment
  • Monitor and confirm appropriate distribution of check requests by EHS
  • Perform the monthly check run to initiate member payments from EHS
  • Verify and prepare refund requests for submission to EHS

Cash Management

  • Identify and post cash receipts from the bursar to the correct CWM invoice
  • Perform invoice offset when necessary
  • Identify and prepare refund requests for submission to AP
  • Address inquiries on the accounts receivable aging report from CWM departments                                           

Departmental Support

  • Communicate with CWM departmental staff and the Medical School staff
  • Provide departments with needed information and assist in problem resolution                                   
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of management regarding fiscal and internal control policies

 

Support

  • Provide support to team members through cross-training                                          
  • Collaborate with coworkers to ensure adequate coverage during absences                                                

Other

  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Maintain current knowledge in areas related to primary job function through training courses or review written materials
  • Identify improvements to financial controls and reporting
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Level Degree or equivalent in Accounting and/or Finance
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret financial documents such as system reports at both account and summary levels
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar software
  • PeopleSoft experience a plus
