Department Summary / Department Overview
The Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies (RPLS) Department, which is housed in the College’s School of Professional Studies, was established in 1948 and is fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT). The department offers B.S. degrees in Recreation, Outdoor Recreation, Recreation Management, and Therapeutic Recreation as well as M.S. in Recreation and M.S.Ed. in Recreation Education – both with concentrations in Environmental and Outdoor Education, Management of Leisure Services, and Therapeutic Recreation (residential and online) – and an online Therapeutic Recreation Graduate Certificate. Both the department’s undergraduate core curriculum and Therapeutic Recreation program received continuing accreditation with commendations from COAPRT in 2017. Accredited since 1990, it is the most comprehensive leisure services professional preparation program in the Northeast. The current enrollment is approximately 130 undergraduate and 65 graduate majors.

A department that actively promotes equity, inclusion, diversity and social justice, the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department houses the Inclusive Recreation Resource Center (IRRC). Partially funded by grants totaling over $1 million, the IRRC assesses and improves the inclusiveness and accessibility of parks and recreation facilities and programs by providing education and assistance to agencies around the globe. A leader in best practices for inclusion, the IRRC offers exciting research opportunities.

Also a national leader in outdoor education, the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department houses the Coalition for Education in the Outdoors and takes full advantage of using SUNY Cortland’s William H. Parks Family Center for Environmental and Outdoor Education. This unique learning environment, located on Raquette Lake in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, is home to the only National Historic Landmark in the SUNY system.

The department’s full-time faculty members make teaching their first priority while balancing impressive records of scholarship and service. This fall marks the department’s 68th Annual Cortland Recreation Conference, the longest student-run conference in the nation. This hallmark event is one of countless examples of the department’s commitment to applied learning and integrating theory with practice. Major Responsibilities

•Teach undergraduate and graduate courses primarily in recreation administration/leisure services management and core areas of the curriculum. In addition to core classes of recreation administration and legal aspects, teaching areas could include human resource management, commercial and entrepreneurial recreation, campus recreation, special events planning, site and facility planning, camp and outdoor program administration, and/or youth development. Teaching courses in other core areas of the curriculum such as foundations of recreation, programming, leadership, evaluation and research could be considered as well.
•Advise undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the program.
•Provide service to the RPLS Department, the School of Professional Studies, the SUNY Cortland campus community, and the professional field.
•Engage in scholarly work and activities as appropriate to the application and receipt of tenure and promotion at SUNY Cortland.
•Guide graduate student research.
•Supervise interns as needed.

Required Qualifications

•Earned doctorate, with at least one degree in recreation, parks or leisure studies. ABD applicants with a designated date of completion within twelve (12) months of start date may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

•Teaching and professional experience in the recreation administration/leisure services management area.
•Current Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification.
•Demonstrated record of scholarly work (publications and presentations) in recreation and leisure services, or strong evidence of potential for future related scholarly work.
•Involvement as a member of local, state or national professional associations in the field.
•Demonstrated record of academic or community service, or strong evidence of potential for future related service contributions.
•Ability to teach computer application skills, including social media, in ways specifically relevant to the field of recreation, parks and leisure studies.
