Departmental Overview
The Division of Data Science and Information is a newly formed Division at the organizational level of our Colleges, Schools, and Divisions. It is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year. It includes a BA degree in Letters & Science and a new minor. It is responsible for supporting the campus-wide data science education program, including a foundational introductory course, Data 8 and 100, serving over 2,000 students and growing rapidly, with dozens of connector courses, several advanced courses serving thousands of students, and a portfolio of co-curricular programs. This position will be responsible for continuing to grow and develop programs working closely with colleagues within the Division, across campus, as well as with partners in industry and other academic institutions to ensure the effective delivery of our program and ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration.

This position involves managing a significant, independent academic or research program. Formulates program strategies and goals. Plans, directs and controls program budget and other related resources.

Responsibilities
40% Directs and administers an independent program with complete administrative and programmatic responsibility. Provides leadership for a broad portfolio of data science co-curricular offerings. Develops and administers large programs to match students with internal projects as well as identifying, soliciting, and managing projects with external partners. Includes finding projects, scaling programs, and managing relationships including from State and Federal agencies as well as developing industry partnerships. Oversees integration of project opportunities into student curriculum (e.g., undergraduate Honors Program). Manages teams of people matching students to research projects (currently 300-500+ applications to match with 30-40 projects with a goal of growing program to match 1000 students with 50-100 projects). Oversees management of teams of peer consultants and development of new peer consulting programs. Oversees student team program within the Division, including recruitment, onboarding, culture, and leadership development.

15% Facilitates efforts of various departments, managers and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration. Develops relationships and works with colleagues in the Division and across campus to align divisional goals with campus priorities and identify new campus needs. Works with various research units on campus, central IT, and the library to advance campus-wide collaboration. An example is the establishment of a data science peer advising hub in Moffitt Library which serves students from all disciplines in accessing data science tools and resources.

Works with colleagues at institutions such as CSUs, HBCUs, High Schools, and Community Colleges, as well as other universities and colleges, to investigate and develop high-value opportunities for cross-institution collaborations.

10% Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams. Collaborates with External Relations and Data Sciences staff to build community among affiliated ladder faculty, instructors, students and alumni. Develops sustainable approaches for engaging DSEP faculty, students, and alumni in fundraising and Data Sciences improvement efforts in programmatic areas. Leads or collaborates in developing grant proposals or pitches to funding agencies and donors.

10% Manages human and financial resources associated with programs as well as overseeing the development and expansion of existing programs. Develops and implements student and staff advancement pipeline and leadership training. Ensures that all practices within the programs are actively aligned with and advance the Division's equity, inclusion, and diversity goals.

10% Assists in developing research, participates in professional conferences and provides public relations support. Collaborates with colleagues at peer institutions, community colleges, and other institutions to remain abreast of progress with Data Science programs nationally and internationally. Collects, analyzes, and disseminates information about comparable national and international academic efforts in data science education, infrastructure, and organization in order to ensure that Berkeley is continuing to lead in this area. Works with leadership and staff of local, state, regional, and national organizations (e.g., West Big Data Innovation Hub, Data Science Leadership Summit) to develop partnerships supporting and advocating for programs described above.

5% Participates in the program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of program. Oversees decisions to hire staff and students to carry out program goals within budget, assesses adherence to plans, adapts as appropriate. Develops program budget proposals.

5% Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly. Oversees development of program materials, and builds processes to ensure each student-facing program has clear and appropriate learning objectives, interactions and activities and meets high quality standards. Implements and maintains quality review processes focused on student outcomes and aligned with Data Sciences goals. Collaborates with partner departments and campuses to assess program's effectiveness and recommend changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.

5% Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long-term planning. Develops vision for and works with Data Sciences and campus stakeholders to improve student experience across campus and to expand opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Required Qualifications
*Detailed knowledge and experience working in the administration of tier one public research universities.
*Knowledge of and experience working in data science or closely related field (Computer Science, History, Statistics, Information management, Analytics, etc.).
*Experience providing management and oversight for multistakeholder, bureaucratic organizations including experience working directly with faculty from a wide range of disciplines.
*Experience developing and executing workshops, conferences or immersion programs.
*Demonstrated project and team management skills.
*Excellent capacity for teamwork.
*Advanced oral and written communication skills.
*Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
*Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
*Strong skills in developing, analyzing, and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals. Independent capacity to devise and tune methods to problem situation. Ability to orient quickly in new domains of research.
*Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications
*Experience developing and evaluating pedagogy (especially in course design, development, and quality improvement) strongly preferred.
*Demonstrated experience and history of planning, designing, developing, implementing, managing and growing technology-based programs in either academic or professional settings desired.
*Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
*Master's degree in a related subject, plus 7+ years' experience and/or equivalent experience/training.
