Campus Venue Services, a division of University Services, provides a broad range of event, performance, and venue support services for the Princeton University community.  The Performing Arts Services unit manages Richardson Auditorium, Frist Theater, and provides support for multiple University theaters and venues.  

The Theater Operations Support provides recurring operational support for event rehearsals and productions at Richardson Auditorium.  Additionally, this position provides periodic event support at Taplin Auditorium, Frist Theater, and other venues throughout the University.  The technician specializes in audio support, providing live sound engineering, and recording services.  With technical expertise, the Theater Operations Support provides all manner of production services including lighting, audio, video, rigging, staging, and stage management.  This position serves in a limited supervisory capacity as a support lead within the pool of casual technical labor and will frequently give direction on behalf of the Performing Arts Services Production Manager. 

In supporting the direction of the Performing Arts Services Production Manager, the Theater Operations Support performs in a variety of roles to assist with production including music, dance, and theater events, lectures, and conferences.  In preparation for events, the Theater Operations Support provides setup support of stage elements, including chairs, stands, platforms, risers, scenery, and instruments.  The Theater Operations Support participates in load-in and load-out of equipment, including the use of a stage lift.  Depending on the needs, the Theater Operations Support may organize and support the setup of the technical equipment, including lighting console setup, focus of units, and any additional audio-visual requirements.  During rehearsals and performances, the Theater Operations Support will serve a number of possible functions, including but not limited to: deckhand, stage manager, lighting console operator, or event assistant. 

The Theater Operations Support helps maintain a safe and compliant environment, which meets the OSHA and University requirements for worker, performer, and patron safety.  The Theater Operations Support ensures that all stage elements are secure and safe.  This position has an understanding that the expertise level of the presenters varies and is capable of being flexible, as well as supportive throughout all phases of the production process.  The Theater Operations Support is capable of supporting conventional and non-conventional venues, i.e., outdoor or multi-purpose spaces, throughout the University. 

The Theater Operations Support provides excellent service to students, faculty, staff, and external clients.  They will be directed by the full-time staff to exceed client expectations with a supportive and helpful manner. 

PLEASE NOTE:  This position is part-time; 22 hours per week with the potential of additional hours when needed.  This opportunity is a 10-Month Term Position with the expected start date of 9/3/2019 and end date of 6/30/2020.  A full job description will be furnished prior to interview. 

  • Provides technical operational assistance for events in Richardson Auditorium, with an emphasis on audio support, and including limited supervision of other casual production staff.


  • Provides supplemental production support in theaters across campus, including Taplin Auditorium, Frist Theater, Lewis Arts complex, Frist MPR rooms, Class of 1970 Whitman Theater, Wilson Black Box, Forbes Black Box Theater, and outdoor spaces.


  • Provides assistance with the repair and maintenance of the production equipment in Richardson Auditorium, Taplin Auditorium, Frist Theater, and other campus venues as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. 


The Theater Operations Support must interact effectively with individuals at all levels within and outside the University, possessing good judgment and discretion.  The Theater Operations Support must provide a high level of service.  


Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in technical theater operations, preferably in a University setting or comparable experience in the live event industry.
  • Willingness and ability to work with a flexible schedule, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, and long hours.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to assist all levels of student, departmental, and external performers and presenters, from professional to novice.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and understanding of all theater operations including:
    • audio systems, setup, and design
    • lighting systems, instruments, and design
    • video
    • stage management
