The Dean’s Office invites applicants for the position of Assistant Dean of Arts & Sciences.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Academic Advising

  • Advise Exploratory students
  • Facilitate Individualized Majors and Minors
  • Guide students who have been dismissed from CBA, CON, COE, and MET
  • Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and FERPA policies

Scrutiny of Academic Progress

  • Meet with students with multiple academic deficiencies
  • Contact and meet with students with low mid-term grades
  • Review semester grades and determine probation and suspension status
  • Meet with students and parents seeking help with academic issues
  • Work with other administrators, faculty, athletic office, and Academic Success Center to help students with academic difficulties

Probation and Suspension

  • Critique probation and suspension letters at the end of each semester
  • Inform students of the suspension appeal process
  • Student Academic Performance (SAP)- advocate for students' financial aid appeals
  • Try to accommodate needs of struggling students on case-by-case basis

Attend Leadership Forum meetings

Attend Council of Chairs' meetings

Student Academic Performance (SAP)- advocate for students' financial aid appeals

Special Cases

  • Facilitate special needs of students (AARC, Counseling Services, etc.)
  • Monitor progress of students on academic probation through meetings
  • Respond to e-mails regarding suspension and financial aid appeals
  • Help meet the needs of students with registration obstacles
  • Approve and sign off on Independent Study, Course Substitutions, Curriculum Change, Overloads

Communication Liaison

  • Serve as a resource for faculty with unique student cases
  • Listen to faculty's needs and report to the Dean when appropriate
  • Help resolve conflict between students, parents and faculty
  • Receive phone calls from parents and communicate concerns to Dean
  • Facilitate meetings with students, parents, and faculty when needed

Respond to all requests from Registrar, Enrollment Management Team, Provost's Office

Report weekly to the Dean

Collaborate with various offices within VU (Career Center, Study Abroad, Multi-Cultural Center, Academic Success Center) for improved programming and catalog language

  • Serve on task force and search committees, as requested
  • Teach up to one-half course load
  • Participate in Council of Academic Advisor meetings and professional development opportunities

  • Candidates for this position must have at least a Master’s degree, though a Ph. D. is preferred.
