Animal Care Assistant III🔍School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States📁Research📅Aug 09, 2019 Post Date📅84281 Requisition #The Veterinary Service Center within the Department ofComparative Medicine is seeking an Animal Care Assistant III to provide advancedcare and husbandry for a variety of animal species (including mice, rats, andany other species as directed by supervisor).

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:weaning, isolating pregnant females, checking for mucus plug, and sexing of avariety of strains of rodents (including transgenic and immune compromisedstrains) and housing according to OLAW guidelines and under researcher's direction. Maintain accurate breeding record of matingand weaning of animals. Observes for and recognizes signs of illness in animalsor death of animals under assigned care and completes the required forms forthe Animal Health Care Staff. Completesrequired forms, bags, tags, and stores dead animals in appropriate cold storageareas. Checks the room environment andreports any deviations to the animal room standard operating procedure to theVSC maintenance staff. Maintains daily records of animal holding roomactivities.Fill in any area animal holding area (outside facility), includingcage wash if necessary, in the absence of workers or covering vacations.Obtains diagnostic lab specimens (e.g. blood for viral serologies, feces forPCR analysis, and DNA samples for genotyping). Water testing, autoclaving andor ATP/Rodac plating. The incumbent will provide training to lower level animalcare assistants.


The animal care assistant must have three years ofapplicable animal care experience in a research or animal laboratory setting;prefer certification at the AALAS technician level or equivalent training;familiarity with OLAW and U.S.D.A. guidelines. Must possess mechanical ability,manual dexterity, and personal standards of cleanliness, neatness andorganizational ability. Must be able to read, write, understand, communicateand follow written and oral instructions provided in English. Must be capable ofproperly handling and restraining all species of common laboratory animals,have no abnormal fear of any common laboratory species and should be free ofanimal-related allergies. The animal care assistant will complete anOccupational Health Surveillance Questionnaire and may be required to undergo aphysical examination and immunizations. Must comply with governmentalregulations and University policies regarding health and safety and observe andsupport good health and safety practices.
