Mathematics and Computer Science: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Computer Science -000266

The University of Richmond Department of Mathematics and Computer Science invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor starting in the 2020-21 academic year.

We are seeking a colleague who will enhance the undergraduate teaching as well as scholarly and creative opportunities provided by our computer science program. The area of specialty is open, but we especially welcome applicants with background in data science, graphics and visualization, human-computer interaction, computer organization, distributed/cloud computing, machine learning/artificial intelligence, database systems, or cybersecurity. The University is hiring a cohort of faculty with a focus on data science, which could include this hire, if appropriate. This cohort could offer common scholarly and pedagogical interests, intellectual support, and could facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations between departments. A Ph.D. in computer science, or closely related discipline, is required and must be completed by the start date. Strong applicants at the associate and full professor level will also be considered.

Applicants should have the potential and desire to commit to highly effective, inclusive teaching at all levels of the undergraduate computer science curriculum and to maintain a vigorous research program that has the potential to engage undergraduates in meaningful research outcomes. We are firmly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, striving to give all students interested in computer science the opportunity, skills, and support needed to succeed. We are seeking colleagues who share these goals of broadening access and inclusivity in STEM disciplines in general, and in computer science specifically, which aligns with the University's strategic plan (https://strategicplan.richmond.edu) as well as that of the School of Arts and Sciences (https://as.richmond.edu/concept30/about/index.html).

Applicants should click "Apply Now" at the top of the page. Applicants will be asked to submit a single PDF file containing a cover letter, a CV, and three statements:

  1. A statement on teaching discussing the applicant’s philosophy, as well as experience and training as applicable. Please indicate any existing and/or new course preferences.
  2. A statement on research discussing the applicant’s research program and agenda. Please explain how undergraduates may be involved in the research.
  3. A statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM discussing the applicant’s philosophy, as well as experience and training as applicable. Please discuss proposed endeavors, if any.

The successful applicant’s cover letter and statements will discuss how their teaching and scholarly interests will contribute in the context of an undergraduate liberal arts education, and should highlight the applicant's vision for integration of teaching and research. In addition, please include copies of academic transcripts and the names of three references who will receive an email asking them to submit their reference letters to the University's Human Resources department at urhr@richmond.edu. Review of applications will commence November 1, 2019 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the search should be directed to Dr. Barry Lawson (blawson@richmond.edu), chair of the search committee.
