Benam Lab at the Department of Medicine invites applicationsfor motivated, passionate and driven individuals for multiple full-timePostdoctoral Fellow positions in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences andCritical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado at the Anschutz MedicalCampus.


Advances in microsystemsengineering have recently made it possible to create biomimetic microfluidiccell culture devices, known as ‘Organs-on-Chips’, that contain continuouslyperfused microchannels lined by living human cells that recapitulate themulticellular architectures, tissue-tissue interfaces, physicochemicalmicroenvironments and vascular perfusion of the body, which potentially offernew opportunities for disease modeling, drug development and mechanisticstudies. The Benam Lab ( the University of Colorado has adapted this approach to create amicrofluidic human ‘Lung Small Airway-on-a-Chip’ to accurately reconstitutenormal airway physiology, and mimic complex human asthmatic and COPDinflammatory processes and immunepathologies in vitro (NatureMethods 2016;13(2): 151-157). Moreover, most recently we described a newin vitro model system (Breathing-Smoking Lung Chip technology) thatpermits analysis of the effects of whole smoke, from both conventional tobaccoand electronic cigarettes, delivered under physiologically relevant flow conditionsthat mimic breathing on the pathophysiology of differentiated humanmucociliated bronchiolar epithelium (Cell Systems 2016; 3(5): 456-466.e4).

 Position Summary: 

We are looking for talented and enthusiastic candidates tostudy host-pathogen and host-environment interactions as well as airway injuryusing state-of-the-art in vitro model systems and Lung-on-a-Chipplatforms. The successful applicants are expected to be highly motivated,driven and collaborative, and have demonstrated the ability to independentlycomplete research projects. Importantly, they need to have expertise in lungcell biology, immunology or tissue engineering. Familiarity with microfluidicsystems and chip microfabrication is a plus, but not essential. Our laboratoryoffers a unique interdisciplinary research ecosystem within Pulmonary Divisionof the University of Colorado School of Medicine, which is the largest and ahighly reputable Division in the U.S.A, and in the world; in conjunction withthe Department of Bioengineering. Moreover, our laboratory pursues high-riskresearch and is translationally focused, with the aim of positively impactinghuman health and our society through our discoveries.


The Postdoctoral Fellows will work on projects that lie atthe interface of respiratory medicine, immuno-microbiology, tissue engineering,and systems and synthetic biology. More specifically, the applicant will (1)develop the Next-Generation Human Lung Airway Chip technologies, (2) studytoxico-pathology of emerging tobacco-related products and host-pathogeninetractions, and (3) engineer other relevant microphysiological models andbioartificial organs that improve understanding of human diseases and patientoutcome, particularly in the context of respiratory medicine. The Fellows willdesign and execute experiments and analyze experimental data, and communicatethe findings to the team, their PI, and during Division Lab Meetings whenrequired and generate monthly progress reports. This position requirescandidates who are detail-oriented and interested in problem solving, havegreat communication (written & verbal) skills and are willing to taking theLung-on-a-Chip technologies to the next level. The applicants are expected tohave the skills and self-motivation to perform experiments quickly, analyze,interpret, graph and present data. This position will also provide a uniqueopportunity for the Fellows to write Reports of Invention and file PatentApplications, through innovative thinking and novel technology development.
