Overview

Position Information

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Facilities Maintenance Mechanic - Under general supervision, incumbent performs a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction, and renovation work including but not limited to facilities renovation, maintenance and repair work, estimate costs of materials and labor, determine the priority for requisitioning materials and supplies, may monitor contractor performance and work progress, respond to routine maintenance and service requests, and provide instruction and direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

Objectives - Provide an "Industry Best Practice" preventive maintenance organization to the SDSU Community.

Expectations - Properly functioning equipment and a safe and clean working environment. Thorough and accurate accounting of time and materials. Consistent meeting of university needs in a timely and professional manner with increasingly improved skill. Follow-up on every project or task to ensure that all items are completed to the satisfaction of the FS Director. Maintains a responsible attendance record and consistently meets deadlines. Builds and maintains internal and external customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by the organization. Seeks customer feedback, is responsive to customers and takes appropriate action for the situation.

Performs work in a manner that supports and facilitates the work of others in Facilities Services and the university community. Maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of the department and campus community by practicing individual dignity, using tact and diplomacy, and always being respectful and civil. Uses respectful communication when dealing with people in all situations and demonstrates restraint, fairness and firmness. Works effectively to understand by carefully listening to understand prior to being understood.

Must be able to effectively communicate and successfully interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization. Must be able to perform strenuous physical work; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. Ability to maintain confidentiality and work appropriately within the department hierarchy comm1micating effectively to resolve problems and proactively resolve conflicts or disagreements in the workplace, make suggestions and ask pertinent questions to facilitate effective communication.

Ability to implement safety procedures, resolve problems and improve safety in the workplace. Works to instill in others the importance of workplace safety rules and regulations and takes appropriate actions.

Ability to conduct hazard assessments, and address those hazards accordingly; promptly follows­ up on health and safety risks, taking appropriate actions and provides the necessary reports and documentation.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $5,402 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,402 - $6,904 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade, or any equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.

Valid California Driver's License required.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • 10-years or more experience as a journey level flooring installer in a government or higher education environment. Ability to work directly from construction plans and specifications.Hands on experience working in the following trades: carpentry, ceiling tile, concrete forming and finishing, roofing systems and cabinet installations.
