The Columns graduate assistant in the University of Georgia Division of Marketing & Communications will support the internal communications efforts of the media communications team. Demonstrated interest in writing general news and features is preferred. The successful candidate also should have a working knowledge of AP style and be willing to become familiar with the UGA institutional style guide.
A successful candidate should have the ability to interview faculty, staff and students and write clear and concise stories that are understandable and engaging to lay audiences. Under general supervision, the successful candidate will work to plan, research and write news and feature articles, edit, proof read, assist in the production process and update content on the Columns website.Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
Bachelor’s degree (preferably in journalism, public relations or related field) and a minimum one year of journalism or equivalent experience.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
-Ability to write clearly and concisely.
-Ability to plan, schedule, organize and generate stories, as assigned.
-Awareness of Associated Press and UGA institutional style guides and the ability to write within these standards.
-Ability to interview members of the university community (faculty, staff, students) and translate their information into news and feature articles.
-Ability to follow a publication production schedule.
-Ability to meet deadlines.
