This position is responsible for varied clerical work involving processing and maintaining relatively complex police dispatching and emergency alert systems, office records, video security monitoring, alarm monitoring, incident and accident reports. The position performs detailed multitasking technical work in taking emergency calls, logging call information, entering accurate information into police records and emergency management software, tracking call status, dispatching and coordinating security, police, fire/rescue, special equipment and emergency personnel. The position routinely works independently with the assistance of on-duty campus police and security officers. The position
is a direct line of communication for the general public and the campus community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Monitors alarm systems and security camera systems.
- Operates the police and security communications console.
- Accesses confidential police information.
- The dispatcher position is non-supervisory.
- Duties include some administrative tasks.
- Operates a multi-line telephone system and radio dispatch console.
- Responds to emergency calls from county E911 system and dispatches the proper responders.
- Analyzes calls for the best way to handle each call, what type of information to be obtained from the caller and which units should be assigned.
- Provides campus patrols with requested information via radio.
- Transmits messages to officers via radio, phone, in writing, or in person.
- Serves as a liaison for citizen reports, complaints, and officers on patrol.
- Operates the Dispatch Module (Computer Aided Dispatch), Daily Log, and Search Screens in the Department reporting program.
- Acknowledges officers over radio and records time of acknowledgement.
- Provides incident numbers and call history information to assigned officers.
- Writes all calls (telephone and radio) on appropriate forms when Computer Aided Dispatch system is down.
- Responds to emergency call boxes and emergency alarm phones and dispatches patrol officers.
- Monitors or receives alarm notification calls and dispatches fire, panic and intrusion alarm responses from the dispatch center.
- Provide weekend and special events information as requested.
- Prepares 'work orders' for officers on patrol or through the report of community members, and maintains other logs for fire alarm tests, etc.
- Contact appropriate office for guests, vendors, and coordinate opening campus buildings as needed.
- Greet students, families, and visitors coming into the Office of Public Safety.
- Duties include some administrative tasks.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid Georgia driver's license
- Skilled use of a computer is required in many of the duties
- Possess current POST Communications Officer certification.
- Successful background check required.
- No felony convictions.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Will be required to comply with all State and/or College mandated training and certifications.
- Excellent listening skills; excellent communication skills (both written and oral; ability to understand and follow written or oral directions)
- Ability to proficiently operate all dispatch center and related office equipment associated with dispatcher job responsibilities.
- Ability to perform shift work and shift rotation
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to distinguish between colors; ability to perform tactfully, courteously and proficiently under the pressures associated with the position.
- Ability to deal effectively with hostile and/or rude persons.
- Ability to speak clearly on telephone and radio.
- Ability to work closely with others.
- Ability to extract pertinent information from a caller or other information source; ability to talk on the radio and phone at the same time.
- Ability to organize and maintain public safety and general office files.
- Prior experience with a public safety organization.
- General knowledge of the campus geographical area.

Physical Requirements
Position may require local travel. Depending upon specific duties, position may require a College-issued uniform or shirt to ensure employees engaged in representing the College to the community are clearly identified as such. Ability to lift and carry files and materials. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone and in writing. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
