Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Art Department of Sam Houston State University invites applicants for a one-year contract to teach Foundations beginning Fall 2019 or Spring 2020.

The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative 4-member team, teaching in WASH (Workshop in Art Studio and History). The WASH program is a nine credit hour foundations program that includes 2 studio courses (Surface Studio & Space Studio) and a lecture course emphasizing contemporary art and theory.

We are seeking candidates with a commitment to teaching and developing curriculum in Foundations. Candidates should have the ability to teach formal skills and concept development, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a teaching team.

The workload of the Visiting Assistant Professor includes teaching 3 courses per semester and working with the Foundations team to coordinate curriculum.

Applicants must have an MFA, experience teaching Foundations, and a strong desire to teach collaboratively and develop curriculum for a contemporary Foundations program. In addition to teaching 3 courses per semester, the successful candidate will be expected to work with the Foundations team on curriculum development and program assessment; assess writing activities of WASH students and portfolios of BFA students; document student work and maintain WASH archives; and participate in Foundation faculty committee meetings.

Educational Requirements for the Position

MFA in Art or more specific art field.

Experience Required for the Position

Experience teaching Foundations.

Other Requirements for the Position

A strong desire to teach collaboratively and develop curriculum for a contemporary Foundations program.
