The Assistant Director of Residence Life (one of three) plays an integral role in the leadership, direction, and vision of Housing and Residence Life at Northern Arizona University. The Assistant Director is pivotal in working collaboratively with Housing and Residence Life staff to fully enact the department’s mission statement: To provide welcoming vibrant communities that foster personal growth and enhance the student experience.

An ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrated a true commitment to inclusive communities and value for intercultural competency and development. Additionally, they will have integrated the following Housing and Residence Life values in to their professional practice: learning, integrity, student-centered, inclusive-communities, and attitude-of-service.

As a departmental leader, the Assistant Director of Residence Life provides guidance, support, and supervision of an educational area of five or more buildings/complexes housing over 2,500 students. The Assistant Director contributes to and helps develop a robust residential program for on-campus students. Housing and Residence Life at NAU is committed to the total development of the student within an inclusive community through community standards, community experiences, intentional conversations, and encouraged personal growth and academic success.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Residence Life, Hall Staffing and Programs.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

STAFF SUPERVISION AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Supervise and mentor at least five Residence Hall Directors (Master level, full-time, live-in).
  • Indirectly supervise graduate students in residence life, building/complex student staff of Resident Assistants, Desk Managers, and Desk Assistants.
  • Evaluate staff efforts/progress based on clear and comprehensive expectations and timely, ongoing performance feedback.
  • Facilitate meetings with full-time staff to discuss progress on goals, opportunities for new initiatives or collaborative projects, and to get building/complex updates; meet individually with graduate students in area at least three times throughout the academic year.
  • Provide training and development opportunities for staff; participate in departmental-related trainings.
  • Engage staff members in conversations and development opportunities around intercultural competency, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Contribute to full-time, graduate, and paraprofessional staff recruitment and selection processes.
  • Actively engage staff in their professional development plans.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

  • Provide leadership and direction to staff regarding the implementation of departmental Model of Learning and Development (MoDL) and associated program-specific foci (e.g. first year students, sophomores, etc.).
  • Establish goals and priorities for building inclusive communities; promote and demonstrate the department’s Commitment to Inclusive Communities by aiding in the creation of environments that value and respect individuals, and integrate an awareness and appreciation of differences.
  • Encourage staff to utilize departmental and campus resources to facilitate the development of an environment that provides academic, educational, and student engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with HRL Residential College staff to support the Residential College program including programmatic, administrative, and student staff (Residential College Ambassadors).
  • Support the Inclusion and Diversity (ID) Scholar program in residential communities with oversight by the Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA Student Services.
  • Review, research, and evaluate all aspects of community development to ensure best practices are being implemented in policies, programs, and procedures designed to meet residential student needs.
  • Promote sustainable/green initiatives and practices.
  • Disseminate necessary information for central programming and resources in conjunction with the Coordinator of Staff and Community Development.
  • Monitor and track community development activities and reports.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of HRL Signature Events intended to enliven the NAU residential and campus communities.

STUDENT CONDUCT, CRISIS RESPONSE, AND BEHAVIORAL MANAGEMENT

  • Work closely with the Assistant Director and Coordinator for Residential Student Conduct and Development and staff from the Office of Student Life to ensure conduct management consistency of area student conduct cases and staff adjudication procedures.
  • Serve as a hearing officer for student conduct cases that may result in University Housing contract termination; review appeals to Residence Hall Director decision outcomes.
  • Meet with students who exhibit signs of possible self-harm or thoughts of self-harm to ensure appropriate follow-up and support.
  • Provide support and guidance to full-time, graduate, and paraprofessional staff in the management of student conduct and behavioral concerns in the halls.
  • Educate staff and students on Housing and Residence Life policies and procedures, including development, rationale, and implementation.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Life, NAU Police Department, Counseling Services, Equity and Access, Disability Resources, and other key University stakeholders.
  • Serve as a member of the Student Behavioral Intervention Team; identify and update the team on residential students of concern.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation with other Assistant Directors to provide emergency/crisis support and consultative assistance to on-call staff; provide leadership to the residence halls during times of crisis; respond to critical incidents.

COMMUNICATION AND PARTNERSHIPS

  • Communicate area and departmental trends, concerns, and achievements regularly with the Associate Director of Residence Life, Hall Staffing and Programs.
  • Develop positive working relationships with other campus departments, agencies, and resources that serve students.
  • Consider parents/family members as partners in the growth and development of residential students; provide timely follow-up via e-mail and/or phone with parents/family members regarding their students’ NAU experiences.
  • Participate in and/or lead various meetings and development exercises including weekly Hall Leadership and hall staffing Assistant Directors meetings.

OPERATIONAL AND FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

  • Support full-time, graduate, and paraprofessional staff in their roles of building managers; encourage prompt attention to facilities related issues/concerns and proficient use of StarRez for operational functions.
  • Consult with trades’ supervisors and other Facility Services staff to ensure reasonable and timely follow-up on maintenance and building work requests.
  • Understand and be able to support staff with facilities/operational procedures such as facility maintenance monitoring (StarRez & TMA), room assignments, room changes, hall transfers, building occupancy, consolidation, accommodations, application processes, etc.
  • Communicate major incidents or concerns to the Associate Director, Maintenance Operations and/or the Associate Director, Administrative Services as they arise within area.
  • Advocate for facilities enhancements that promote the holistic development of students; work with staff to determine appropriate needs and improvements.
  • Assist in the management and supervision of summer operations including staffing oversight for summer camps, conferences, workshops, and student housing.
  • Participate in hall opening and hall closing planning processes according to scheduled building usage.
  • Provide oversight of area budget for expenditures and student employment.
  • Contribute to the development of the Housing and Residence Life budget; provide staff with information regarding budgetary decisions, planning, and implementation.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Contribute to Housing and Residence Life’s vision, mission, and values through participation in strategic planning, department goal setting, and determining hall staffing priorities and initiatives.
  • Participate in University, divisional, and departmental trainings and developmental activities.
  • Lead hall staffing and departmental initiatives, exercises, and development opportunities around diversity, inclusion, and intercultural competency.
  • Serve on and/or chair Housing and Residence Life committees, University committees and/or commissions.
  • Stay current in higher education and student development trends and best practices. Serve as a departmental resource regarding community development, diversity and inclusive community building, staff supervision and development, first year students, sophomores, etc.
  • Instruct EPS 406: RA Pre-Service Training Class, a two credit course for hired RAs and those selected as alternates, as needed.
  • Develop an individual professional development plan in consultation with the Associate Director of Residence Life; serve as a role model relative to the professional development of full-time, graduate, and central office staff.
  • Attend and/or present at local, regional, or national workshops/conferences.

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

The Assistant Director of Residence Life is a full-time, live-off, Service Professional role. The position is exempt and work schedules are influenced by student, staff, and community needs. Work outside of traditional hours may include consultative assistance to staff, attendance at special events and functions, staff training and development participation, and on-call responsibilities.
