Departmental Overview
Berkeley Hope Scholars (BHS) provides individualized services to current and former foster youth who are also often transfer students, re-entry students, formerly incarcerated or system impacted (probation youth), and orphans who historically come from underserved backgrounds such as underrepresented, low income, first-generation college students. BHS programs and services include funding opportunities, a credit-bearing course, individual strategic advising and problem-solving counseling, service learning internships, peer mentorship, information and referral resources, academic enrichment workshops, and community-building events.

The Program Coordinator performs responsibilities that include academic and resource needs assessment, counseling of students to enable access to campus and community-based services, financial aid counseling, assistance with verifying and documenting eligibility for programs and services, instruction of credit-bearing course, and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to student academic success. Incumbent serves as lead staff member responsible for student academic counseling to better balance course work with personal and professional responsibilities and develop support systems that promote student success, academic achievement, and better engagement with the university thereby promoting overall professional success.

Responsibilities
  • Provides multicultural academic and personal counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to Berkeley Hope Scholars (e.g., those with disabilities, students who are parents, low-income, first-generation college, previously incarcerated or otherwise system-impacted, and who have lived experiences from other underrepresented communities, etc.). Incorporating a variety of theoretical approaches, the incumbent manages a caseload of students from pre-admission outreach through preparation for post-graduation transition to employment and/or graduate school; manages student assessment/analysis of students' needs and assists with developing a plan of action to enhance student academic success. Manages use of technology and social media, and makes recommendations for and develops new and expanding academic counseling activities to achieve unit goals and meet student needs. Cultivates relationships and refers students to appropriate specialized programs and resources.

  • Leads supervision and training of between five to 10 unit student staff including Berkeley Hope Scholars Peer Advisors, interns, and other student interns. Manages daily functions of BHS and provides academic and personal coaching to student staff and helps them advance through various student employment opportunities offered by unit.

  • Manages BHS space and all activities including quick question advising process and practices. Cultivates and advances relationships with campus and community partners including University Housing, the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, and University Development and Alumni Relations.

  • Works with academic departments, faculty, and CE3 management to help resolve specific student academic issues and barriers. Strategically engages campus and community partners regarding legislation, policies, and higher education issues that impact Berkeley Hope Scholars. In consultation with the Director of Independent Student Programs, provides program administration that includes strategic and program planning, evaluation, and tracking of budget expenditures, and fundraising development including stewardship. Responsible for cultivating and maintaining relations with long-term funding partners to expand potential initiatives.

  • Facilitates group discussions, seminars, unit-bearing courses events and community activities and processes department awards for students. Plans, implements, and evaluates academic and personal development seminars, courses, and five to seven workshops each semester.

  • Keeps abreast of student trends in higher education, particularly for low-income and first-generation college populations, and uses this information to inform best approaches and possible professional development opportunities.

    Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the trends, characteristics, and issues facing Berkeley Hope Scholars (current and former foster youth, probation youth, and orphans) who often intersect with the first-generation college, pell-grant eligible, transfer student, student parent, and formerly incarcerated communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying theories of multicultural counseling, learning, identity development, and human and career development.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement such as collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring and student advocacy.
  • Knowledge of how to effectively enhance student intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership development.
  • Experience with planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs/projects, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of this student community.
  • Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies
  • Experience with development, fundraising, and stewardship
  • Knowledge of university, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate information in small and large group settings
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.

    Education/Training:
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters in Education Psychology or Counseling and/or equivalent experience/training

    Salary & Benefits
    The annual salary range of the position is $64,000- $67,000, commensurate with experience.
