The Goldman School of Public Policy is a graduate school that prepares students for careers in public leadership.
The majority of the students at GSPP are enrolled in the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program, which emphasizes the applied and quantitative dimensions of policy making. The MPP may also be earned concurrently with degrees from several other UC Berkeley schools: law, public health, engineering, social welfare, international and area studies and the Energy Resources Group. GSPP also offers a Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program which focuses on policy management and leadership as well as a doctoral program for students interested in policy research. While the Goldman School does not offer a bachelors-level degree, the public policy minor is available to undergraduates enrolled at UC Berkeley.
Goldman School faculty represent the top researchers in their respective fields, which include economics, political science, law, social psychology and engineering. Their expertise ranges from education policy to racial profiling to clean energy. As teachers, they are dedicated to training tomorrow's policy leaders. As researchers, their work is shaping public policy today. Responsibilities
Recruitment and Admissions: Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, reviews applications for admission and conducts admissions interviews; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley.
Conducts admissions recruitment presentations as needed.
Manages transition and on-boarding of new students.
Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides the full range of student services to MPA student population.
Within the Goldman School of Public Policy provides, and makes recommendations for the improvement of the MPA.
Develops, implements, and manages student support services that promote students' academic success.
Assesses student needs, and plans appropriate responses.
Assesses problems that arise affecting students, investigates alternatives, and utilizes creativity and expert understanding of student matters to devise & implement solutions.
Serves as point person for faculty seeking guidance on difficult or uncommon situations.
Counsels students in crisis and students in violation of the campus code of conduct.
Manages recruitment and hiring of GSIs to support curricular needs.
Negotiates and coordinates with Graduate Division, Office of the Registrar, Berkeley International Office, Office of Student Conduct, Disabled Students Program, and other offices as needed.
Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion.
Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as commencement and orientation.
Plans regular events to help incorporate MPA students with Goldman community of faculty, students, and alumni.
Oversees such events that may occur on occasional evening or weekend dates.
Responsible for setup and breakdown of site, including disposal of food and recyclables and trash once event is ended.
Oversees the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships; advises students on financial aid options on campus and extra-mural fellowship opportunities; oversees processes for equitable assignment of GSIs and coordinates GSI assignments each term.
Resolves extremely sensitive, specialized, and/or complex financial assistance issues related to departmental fellowships, academic student employment and related degree progress issues.
Other duties as assigned.
May supervise staff, inclusive of student or clerical staff.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge or ability to learn of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge or ability to learn of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
Demonstrated ability and strong interpersonal skills to work in a multicultural environment with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences, personality types and communication styles.
Demonstrated experience in building graduate student support services that assist faculty in attracting, retaining and developing an exceptional, outstanding, diverse, inclusive graduate student population.
Skills in assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Experience in effectively using metrics to build strong a student support organization, including metrics related to building a diverse, exceptional, outstanding, and inclusive student body, professional development, student retention etc.
Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Outstanding attention to detail and follow-through.
Ability to effectively and persuasively represent the Goldman School of Public Policy.
Ability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekend hours.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $50,400.00 - $92,900.00.
