Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, coordinate major activities of the Tobacco, Obesity, and Oncology Laboratory (TOOL), of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University. The main research focus will be on a sponsored project examining the effects of behavior change interventions (tobacco cessation and weight management) among adults in the community and Cancer Center. Other projects will involve studying cancer health disparities in various contexts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Develop and manage study protocols and procedures for studies Tobacco, Obesity, and Oncology Laboratory. Develop and maintain research project methods, techniques, procedures, and regulatory documents including IRB submissions. (20%)
  2. Conduct research interviews. This includes viability evaluations, obtaining consents, completing case report forms and maintaining data records. (20%)
  3. Deliver evidence-based smoking cessation and weight management counseling. (10%)
  4. Ensure data collection for all research studies is up to date and accurate prior to data audits from the study sponsor. (10%)
  5. Oversee the administrative aspects of study, such as scheduling, screening, tracking of patients and monitoring of study budgets and expenditures; work with staff to assure timely progress reports are given to the principal investigator and regulatory agencies. (10%)
  6. Supervise project staff; assure all guidelines are followed by the project staff for each study. Facilitate weekly project reports. (10%)
  7. Develop and manage electronic databases used for participant tracking and data collection, assuring that appropriate privacy and confidentiality requirements are met; develop and implement quality control and audit procedures for the database. (5%)
  8. Work with community organizations to educate them about research studies, seek their help to recruit study participants and to develop participant retention strategies. (5%)
  9. Perform complex statistical analysis to be used in grant applications and manuscripts. (5%)
  10. Independently write sponsor progress reports, manuscripts, grant and pilot applications. Develop and manage the study website. (4%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with principal investigator, study staff, and administrative staff of the Cancer Center.

University: Regular contact with School of Medicine personnel in the Grants and Contracts Office, University personnel in research administration and compliance (IRB).

External: Regular contact with community organizations and with patients, research collaborators at other institutions as well as funding sponsor representatives.

Students: Regular contact with student employees in the department.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervise research assistants and/or project staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5 years of experience in managing health related and behavioral research projects.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or PhD in psychology, education, behavioral science, or a related field preferred. Certification in Human Subjects Protection and HIPAA in Research will be required within the first month of employment if candidate is not already certified.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  1. Experience working with underserved populations and counseling or addiction services would be beneficial. Supervisory experience preferred. Grant writing experience and experience in complex statistical analysis required.
  2. Must be highly motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently.
  3. Must possess excellent oral and written communications skills. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  4. Must have supervisory experience with leadership and organizational skills to effectively manage relationships.
  5. Must have demonstrated ability to work with underserved populations.
  6. Must be flexible and able to adapt and manage multiple demands and changing priorities.
  7. Must have the ability to take collaborative and creative approaches to problem solving.
  8. Must have the ability to be responsive and proactive with respect to project needs.
  9. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  10. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint.
  11. Must have ability to program software.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Some work will take place in an office environment, but the research assistant must be prepared to work in the community as well (requires transportation), such as community-based organizations, health fairs, churches, etc. Some evenings and weekends required to meet project needs.
