Associate Vice President of Enterprise Applications

The Pennsylvania State University (www.psu.edu) seeks a highly motivated leader with exceptional leadership, strategic, operational, and interpersonal skills and an expertise in enterprise application to join the leadership team of University’s information technology group as the Associate Vice President of Enterprise Applications.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Penn State, founded in 1855 as an agricultural college, admitted its first class in 1859. The Pennsylvania legislature designated Penn State as the Commonwealth's sole land-grant institution in 1863, which eventually broadened the University's mission to include teaching, research, and public service in many academic disciplines. Penn State has awarded more than a half-million degrees and has been Pennsylvania's largest source of baccalaureate degrees at least since the 1930s.  A college of medicine and teaching hospital were established in 1967 with a $50 million gift from the charitable trusts of renowned chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey. In 1989 the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport became an affiliate of the University. In 2000, Penn State and the Dickinson School of Law merged. Penn State's online World Campus graduated its first students in 2000 and now enrolls more than 12,000.

ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting to the University’s VPIT-CIO, the Associate Vice President will be a key member of the Penn State IT senior leadership team and will provide University-wide leadership in the development and support of 21st-century business systems and practices.  The role will ensure that the enterprise systems support the strategic mission of the university across teaching and research.  The successful candidate will work closely with University stakeholders to understand how to best meet the needs of business units across the institution.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee a portfolio of administrative technology services and associated projects and service roadmaps, with effective management of the IT staff, contractors, vendors, and stakeholder networks associated with each service.
  • Lead and supervise the Enterprise Applications management team, including priority and goal setting, performance management, mentoring, recognition, and professional development.
  • Redefine the university’s strategy for software and systems integration.
  • Integrate and coordinate development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of enterprise applications, and assure that services have appropriate resources, current portfolio includes: Software Engineering, Collaboration Tools (O365 and G-Suite), and Document Management, Applications Integrations, and Business Systems Analysts.Additional enterprise applications are queued up to be a part of the portfolio of the Associate Vice President.
  • At the appropriate time after completion of the three major ERP systems (Student, HR, and Finance) the leadership and ongoing operations will transfer to the Associate Vice President.
  • Align Enterprise Applications with the standards developed within Enterprise Service Management to foster consistent adoption of service management and support services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • The ideal candidate for this position will have a proven track record of leveraging the expertise of functional stakeholders, ideally at both leadership and technical/operational levels. He/she will showcase the knowledge and willingness to continually stay on top of the latest industry products and technologies and create an inspiring team environment with an open communication culture. S/he will also bring an understanding of current best practices in data management, analysis, and reporting that comprises both technical and business considerations.
  • The Associate Vice President will be a visible, University-wide leader in all application planning, development, and support that advance the teaching, research, and service missions of the University.
  • Strong experience with simultaneously balancing immediate business priorities/projects while driving the overarching strategic vision of PSU is required, along with a demonstrated history of building and maintaining effective teams and successfully leading and driving strategic change in complex, fast-moving organizations.
  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution and at least 10 years of relevant professional experience are required. Professional activity at the national level is expected; experience in a large, complex, distributed organization is required.
