Job Description:

We are seeking an Advisor to assist the College with creating a model for and providing web/live chat advising for continuing, new, and prospective students enrolled or enrolling al Bunker Hill Community College. The model includes a collaboration between academic and student affairs to identify student needs, address student challenges and provide appropriate services and referrals, in an effort to enhance student success and retention. This position has the primary responsibility of providing advising via Live Chat and the associated email account. Approximately 2/3 of this position will be spent on Live Chat and 1/3 spent working with students face-to-face in the LifeMap Commons.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Within LifeMap Commons and utilizing Gecko software provide academic counseling to students on relevant enrollment and academic issues; make appropriate referrals to institutional support services.
  • Employ a Developmental Model of Advising with the goal of enabling students to make informed and appropriate decisions regarding their academic and career paths.
  • Assist students in creating a personalized educational plan utilizing electronic resources and with matching the student with a Learning Community relevant to prior experience, skill set and future goals.
  • Assist with the advisement and registration of all new and continuing students regarding their academic plan, course selection/sequencing, curriculum/concentration selection and changes, career exploration and plans to transition to a 4 year institution.
  • Refer students to individual faculty/program coordinators regarding course and program content as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Student Activities Office and Peer Mentors on our comprehensive new student advising and orientation process; developing and facilitating advising related orientation sessions and coordinating the registration process for new students.
  • Participate in the hiring and training of graduate interns, peer advisors and work-study students.
  • Provide assistance and support for special student programming related to student persistence, retention, and completion; monitor and provide support to students who are on academic probation and suspended students who are returning to the college.
  • Act as a liaison as well as providing referrals for all students to appropriate offices and services when needed.
  • Provide transfer information to students to facilitate a smooth transition into and from BHCC to students' institutions of choice.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders for continued development of canned responses for both online and email advising.
  • Provide training for other student services departments, as well as faculty advisors who want to utilize web/live chat advising .
  • Oversee the appointment calendars for career and transfer services appointments made with QLess
  • Utilize Qualtrics to manage Steps to Success workshop registration system

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Education, Psychology or a closely related field; with three (3) years of experience and/or training involving admissions, academic advisement, career development, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Proficiency in student information systems and technology as well as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent, demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse faculty, staff and student population.
  • Demonstrate and possess a strong understanding of cultural competency and how to communicate effectively to different audiences.
  • Ability to work 2 evenings per week (Monday and Tuesday 11am-7pm).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work Saturdays during peak registration periods.
  • Experience using live chat software.
  • Experience working in a community college.
  • Written and spoken proficiency in more than one language.

Additional Information:

SALARY RANGE: $52,564.00-$62,212.00. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement.

Grade: 5, unit-professional position
