Stanford University is seeking a Program Manager for the Vice Provost and Dean of Research Office (VPDoR) to provide Academic Staff-Research (AS-R) program oversight, support and management to include planning, implementation, auditing, and reporting to meet established deadlines. The AS-R program includes 800+ exempt employees hired to work on Stanford research activities holding an academic appointment as Academic Staff-Research. The Program Manager acts on behalf of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research for all AS-R matters to include reviewing and approving AS-R appointments for all Stanford University units and interacting with university IT for support of the related appointments and reporting systems. The incumbent will serve as a resource to schools and key stakeholders on AS-R policies, procedures, and practices. The Program Manager will also provide human resources services for assigned VPDoR client units. This position reports to the VPDoR Director of Faculty and Academic Affairs with dotted line reporting to the VPDoR Director of HR.

The Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR) is directed by the Vice Provost and Dean of Research and oversees Stanford University's research and research policies and inter-disciplinary programs. The VPDoR office provides oversight for 20 independent labs, institutes and centers, including the physical and biological sciences, engineering, the social sciences and the humanities disciplines, three shared equipment facilities and the offices of Technology Licensing, Environmental Health and Safety, Research Compliance, International Affairs, and Science Outreach.
CORE DUTIES*:

  • Interpret AS-R (university-wide) and human resources (VPDoR clients) policies, and provide advice on processes, procedures and issues. Resolve issues as appropriate and consult with and make recommendations to manager/director to resolve more complex issues.
  • Guide schools and key stakeholders in the AS-R compensation and appointment approval processes.
  • Interact with university IT for support of related appointments and reporting systems.
  • Provide human resources services for assigned units. Work under general supervision on all areas of general human resources.
  • Organize and/or participate in outreach activities that may include developing communications and training, planning/promoting events and/or conferences.
  • Analyze and interpret policies; develop, revise and implement procedures for program or function.
  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit, school, and university-wide. Commit resources and provide information and/or training. May also represent the program or function to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Independently implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day activities of the unit, function or program by identifying and executing tasks and objectives, making recommendations that may impact policies and programs, and assigning resources to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
    * - Other duties may also be assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Education & Experience:
    Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in at least two human resources areas, including: employee relations, employment and labor law, compensation, staffing and employment, training and development, performance coaching and management, and organizational development desired.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint).
  • Ability to quickly learn and utilize new computer programs.
    Certifications and Licenses: None PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
