Temporary Global Education Advisor

Temporary Global Education Advisor (GEA) - Georgetown University's Office of Global Education (OGE)

The Temporary Global Education Advisor (GEA) advises students on academically appropriate study abroad opportunities for a portfolio of programs. The GEA assists students with the application and selection process and acts as the liaison with partner institutions in his/her designated region regarding student support and service. The GEA serves as a resource for curricular deans regarding academic questions for universities within his/her region. The GEA maintains responsibility for program management and fiscal oversight of programs in his/her region. In addition, the GEA works with the Director and OGE Leadership Team on administrative support tasks and performs additional duties that include but are not limited to:

Academic Advising and Program Coordination
  • Responsible for advising students on appropriate study abroad programs, liaising with partner universities and programs, and coordinating exchange programs in a designated portfolio of programs
  • Provide direction to prospective participants through a comprehensive advising program that includes intake, program selection, placement, processing, pre-departure preparation and orientation, while abroad, and re-entry
  • Process student applications, coordinates student interviews for designated programs (as necessary), prepares acceptance packets or denial letters, and coordinates completion and mailing of host institution and/or program's application documents
  • Maintain contact with students and resolves lower level emergencies abroad and refer higher level emergencies to the Director of Global Education
  • Coordinate with the Director of Global Education and/or Senior Associate Director of Affiliated Programs as needed on student emergency incidents and health and safety support
  • Communicate regularly with exchange and partner institutions/programs in designated portfolio of programs regarding agreement management, student curricular issues, on-site programming, disciplinary matters and emergency preparedness
  • Work to resolve curricular issues in conjunction with students and their Georgetown curricular deans
  • Identify and bring curricular issues with implications for OGE policy to the attention of the OGE Leadership Team
  • Obtain information to establish credit hour and grade equivalencies when new programs are added and when the credit or grading system changes for existing programs

Programming, Outreach, and Recruitment
  • Organize and facilitate recruitment and cultural programming for designated portfolio
  • Review and update all information and materials pertaining to designated programs
  • Conduct information sessions, participates in general and country-specific orientations and re-entry programs for students who participate in overseas study
  • Develop materials (electronic and paper-based) for new programs as they are added, and updates existing materials to reflect the addition of new program (i.e., discipline-specific flyers, general study abroad opportunities flyer, etc.)
  • Participate in OGE events promoting global education including Study Abroad Fairs, GAAP Weekends, Family Weekends, and other activities for outreach and collaboration within Georgetown University
Administrative Support
  • Works closely with Director in daily operations and communications with high-level administrators and university guests, often from overseas
  • Responds to special projects needing immediate attention and oversees on-going projects as needed
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of office events, including:
    • Weekly staff meeting (distributing the agenda and meeting minutes)
    • Global Education Program & Policy Committee meeting (distributing the agenda and meeting minutes)
    • OGE office events (e.g., celebrations, retreats, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree required (A Master's degree in international education, higher education administration, or related field is preferred)
  • Experience in education abroad program administration or related field is preferred
  • Experience studying, working and/or living abroad
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and university administrators in order to facilitate a successful education abroad strategy
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with experiential learning, student development and/or intercultural development theory and practice
  • Strong intercultural skills and the ability to communicate effectively in one or more foreign languages
