The Office of University Counsel at Temple University seeks a mid-level attorney, Assistant University Counsel, to handle a wide variety of matters. The preferred candidate will have experience in higher education environments or representing higher education clients and will have demonstrated excellence in one or more of the following areas (1) resolving litigation and disputes arising out of employment, labor, personal injury and other matters; (2) personally handling outside agency matters and internal investigations arising out of student or employee complaints of discrimination; (3) providing advice and counsel on matters involving student affairs and public safety, including student discipline, Clery Act compliance, and crisis management; (4) addressing issues arising under various regulations affecting higher education such as Title IV, Title IX, FERPA, and the Higher Education Act and/or (5) advising on general business and policy matters attendant to university operations.


Although the principal expertise necessary for the position is understanding all aspects of litigation (such as strategies, budgets, etc.), it is anticipated that the successful candidate will have the opportunity to utilize and/or develop skills relating to a variety of areas, with the goal of developing a well-rounded practice in higher education.

The Office of University Counsel provides legal counsel to the University, including all of its schools, departments and units on a diverse range of issues, including government contracts and grants, research, intellectual property, technology transfer, tax and non-profit law, higher education law, privacy, safety and environmental law, compliance, fundraising, investments, construction, real estate, international programs and relationships, and general business transactions. The successful applicant must demonstrate eagerness, ability, proficiency and, preferably, experience in advising and counseling university clients in these areas. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
JD from accredited law school, with high academic achievement, and with at least four (4) years’ experience in handling a variety of litigation matters, preferably with experience representing institutions of higher education institution. Admission to at least one state bar, with ability to become licensed in Pennsylvania within six months of notification of employment. 

Required Skills & Abilities:
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. 
*Must be able to provide a recent professional writing.
*Demonstrated ability to work independently. 

Preferred:
*Experience providing advice and legal counsel at or to an institution of higher education is highly desirable.
